Am I too old????

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone. ...this is my first time posting. I love reading all of the posts and find this site very helpful. Well I'm hoping I can get some good honest advice. I am currently 41 years old and taking my pre reqs before I apply to nursing school. Why I never thought of nursing before is a big regret for me now. At a young age, I decided to try Dental Assisting as a career. Of course in school you're told of all the great opportunities the Dental field has to offer. Well, although it paid the bills it was never enough. I decided to fulfill a lifetime dream of working in law enforcement. I did this for 6 years. I had a daughter and decided it was safer for me to return to the dental field. Well, here I am working for a dentist again and wanting to explore my options. I feel that nursing is my calling as I have always been a nurturing person. I see so much more room for growth and advancement. But I also wonder, am I too old? I just want the honest opinion of those in the field. I have actually asked a few close family members who are nurses their opinions and was told to do it!! That was very encouraging but I still wonder. Are older nurses looked down upon in this field? Just looking for some honest input. Thanks in advance.

I was 39 when I got my LPN license, Now Im 43 and starting the RN program in Jan 5th...I never stopped to think if I was old...go for it

I was 39 when I started. Got my BSN 42. Now at 67 still nursing and loving it. If that is your dream go for it.

Awesome! I'll be 37 when I graduate with my BSN and I hope I am foruntatw to be able to work for 30+ years.

Never too old! I am very proud to say that one is never too old to study and become an RN! I just graduated in June, passed the NCLEX this September, and I just turned 65 years of age this past August! Don't you dare think that 41 is too old. I've got children older than you! Just think of what an impact you'll have on your family. Two of my grandchildren have cited my efforts as the reason for their return to school. Furthermore, I managed to graduate with honors and was elected to the position of Vice President of Service of Phi Theta Kappa, the Honor Society of Community Colleges.

I can't tell you how rewarding that was! And I'm sure I'm not even the oldest Nursing school graduate. So gather up your courage, sharpen your pencils and go for it!

Specializes in Emergency Room, CEN, TCRN.

Oldest person in my cohort is pushing 46 or 47. We've got a couple of 20 years olds, but the average age seems to be late 20's - mid thirties.

Specializes in GENERAL.

You are my inspiration!!!! Congrats to you...I commend you and hope to be just as successful.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

I went back to school at 44 and got my ADN and then my MSN. Graduated at age 47. It's the best thing I've ever done.

Specializes in Hospice, Palliative Care.

I started the prerequisites to a RN program at age 50, and am now within 3 weeks of graduating an associate degree RN program at age 53. While it has been a difficult journey, I thank Jesus I'm in the top 5% of our class, and the student president of the Alpha Delta Nu Honor society for all 5 campuses of the community college I attend. Yes, you are young enough to do this if you apply yourself.

Specializes in Med-surg, home care.

I am 36 career changer and I am waiting to see if I will get into a ABSN program now (I am finished with all my prerequisites). I thought I was too old too but then I realized that I have a least of 26 to work so I might as well do something I want to do. If you want to do it then do it. Besides I think the majority of nurses are "older" anyway.

I'm 45. I'll be 47 when I earn my RN. I sure hope you're not too old...because then I'm ancient. The time is going to go by anyway - might as well do what you want with it!

Best of luck to you!!
