:uhoh21::uhoh21:Hi Everyone!

I need to know the opinion of other nurses because I'm not sure if I'm just waisting my time and money. I became a R.N. late in life, graduated with AASN degree at age of 40 yrs. old. I did this because ever since I was a little girl my dream was to be a nurse. But when I graduated high school I was in love and wanted to get married, and didn't have the money or ambition to go to school for 4 more years. I decided to go to Medical Assistant training school and I worked 22 years as M.A./Office Manager for 2 different doctors. I got burned out from the paper work and responsibilities and low salary for that career, so my husband agreed that I should go for R.N. Well it's been 5 years since I passed NCLEX and now I want to get a BSN because I want to advance. I also LOVE school! I know, I'm a nerd!! Anyway, can I hear some opinions on if I'm too old to try to advance in nursing? I'd appreciate any advice I can get.

Thank-you:bugeyes:

Short answer? NO

Long answer? I am a Diploma graduate (Class of 1973) who graduated with a BSN two years ago at the age of 54. This fall I will be starting on my MSN. I will finish up when I am 58.

Am I too old? Who cares? :)

I am fifty-two years old and I am currently in my second semester of my local ADN program. Before pursuing this, I never even once worked in the medical field.

No, you are never too old.

Started accelerated BSN program at 48, finished at 49, and started my first nursing job in critical care just before turning 50. Go for it.

It's never a waste when you spend your time and money on something that will make you happy. I don't care if you are 80, do what you want! Life is too short. Time is going to go by whether you want it to or not, so why not spend it doing something worthwhile?

Your life is never limited by your age, but by your desire.

A ship is safe in the harbor, but that's not what a ship is meant for.

I'm 50 and in an accelerated RN-BSN program. :D I've been an RN for almost 10 years but want the BSN.

I had a boss a few years ago who was working part-time on a BSN even though she was within a few years of retirement age and the degree wouldn't benefit her at all in her job -- just doing it for the personal satisfaction. (She did, in fact, end up retiring earlier than she had originally planned, right about the same time she finished the degree.)

I am 48, just started my education in nursing. Doing CNA and a couple of pre-reqs. I know it will take a lot of perserverance and determination.

I look at it this way. Being new in this country, either I continue in the career path I was in, and get a good paid job or do something that I know I will fulfill my purpose in life. I hv 20 productive yrs b4 retirement, so i decided to invest some 5 yrs to prepare myself to go into a profession that I believe is a calling. Money or job satisfaction. I chose the latter.

I get discouraged when I think of how old I will be be when I become a RN, but I am not letting that deter me. Take a step at a time. I hv even dreams to go higher than a RN but right now I just concentrate on getting into a nursing school. (my options now is LVN in an Adult School or ASN in a CC, whichever offer comes).

The journey to nursing begins with the first step. It is not easy, getting the momemtum of studying going takes time and discipline. Getting my brain to work and function satisfactory is something I have to work on. :loveya:

I just finished my RN I "was" 48. I keep taking classes cuz i want to go on... I have been told my grades are high enough to do the RN to ms

Got my ADN at 50. Started my BSN at that time. Dropped it for a while. am 57 and considering applying to finish it.

My body is broken. The body of a very much older person. So lady if you are too old I should be in the grave.

I can assure you there are folks much older than you are I who are persuing a first degree as we speak.

LOL join the club!!! I've always liked school (mostly) so I finally am working on my BSN.

Age is a mere symbol. You are as young/old as you believe yourself to be. Remember that when you are in your 40s you are only half way through your working life anyway. I've given this link out before but it helped me out so I'll post it again.
