  1. I have been accepted for the RN program this fall and was given less than a week to take the TEAS test. I bought the Mcgnaw study guide (ecopy). Not really helpful but I had no choice as I didn't have enough time for the ATI testing guide to be shipped to me. There were life science questions... about clouds, rocks, plants, sun and earth; Math was reading labels and graphs, calculations, conversions; English... alot of punctuations - make sure you know the difference between colon and semi colon, sentence construction .. though I have taken English 1A and Comm 1, I found it confusing. I paniced starting from 1st test, didn't have enough time for 3 tests except the last test I had 30 mins left. It was tough for me as i took high school 3o years ago in another country. I would say for those who have taken high school here not long ago should be fine. With all these set-backs, I passed but quite a number didn't and could not join the RN program. I feel real bad for them. Don't worry, if I can make it, so can you. Practice, practice, practice ... even you have a few days to do so. Don't think about it ... just do it!!!
  2. I took my Human Anatomy in summer and have just finished my Human Physiology at WHCC. (community college) Both classes are with lab. They are tough though but if you are committed and work hard you will do well. Email me if you need any info.
  3. I will be taking Microbiology this spring as one of pre-requisites for RN. Can someone give some advices or share some tips on studying style on how to get a A? I am specially concerned with this class as I heard it is a more difficult class. Thank you.
  4. I decided seriously to go into the nursing field when my husband was hospitalized for 8 days during last Thanksgiving. I observed the ways how each nursing staff took care of the patients; noticed some truly fitted into the profession, being compassionate and caring, while for a few others, I couldnt understand why they were there to begin with. I realised that caring for the sick has to come from the bottom of the heart and not because it was a lucrative paying job. So I started taking my pre-requisites in Spring. Glad I made that move and just can't wait to get into the nursing program.
  5. Summer - English 1A and Human Anatomy. Fall - Physiology, Microbiology and Intermediate Algebra Spring - Chemistry, Speech, Psychology
  6. The reasons why I decided on switching to nursing are: 1. I can have a fulfilling career as I will be giving and caring for those in need. 2. Nursing offers a wide scope of jobs, with a wide selection of speciality 3. It allows me flexibility of working hours - I can divide my time between work and family. 4. Being a nurse allows me the skills to care for my family members who have chronic illnesses. 5. I can go as far as I want to, ASN, BSN or Master degree. 6. I can take my time to acquire academic qualification or skills. 7. I won't be out of job as I can easily find a nursing job anywhere. 8. Don't have to worry of job security. Nurses are always in demand. 9. I can choose when to retire. 10. Last but not least the reward is good. These are the few reasons why I chose nursing. Hope this helps.
  7. Very sorry and sad to read about what happened. Keeping her and family in prayers.
  8. I started taking the "easier" classes like sociology and nutrition and if both work out fine, I should be able to get A for both (finishing in May). In this way, I would be able to get myself motivated and pick up my momentum / inertia to continue with the other science classes. Hopefully i will be able to obtain good GPA to qualify for application into other progs. later. The feeling of incomprehension and doubt is inevitable, esp. after many years since I went to high school. I always believe in an effective plan in everything I do, be it career or studies. When i did my AA it worked !!! Taking English 1A and Anatomy for summer, and planning for Physiology and Microbiology for fall, Psychology, Chemistry and speech classes in Spring 09.
  9. CNA certification is a good option as you get to learn the basics of nursing; or you might consider taking a few health science classes that also form part of the RN syallabus. Then you won't hv to take them later when you are doing the RN prog and that might give you opportunity to do part time work or hvg more time to study.
  10. No venture no gain. For me, life is about taking risks. Though I am preparing myself for the nursing program and dont hv any nursing experience to be able to give you more effective advice, somehow I just wanted to give my humble opinion from my perspective. Having worked in the company for a no. of years wld put you at an advantage. If I were you, I think I would take the offer. I cannot deny a DON position (like other higher level positions) entails alot of responsibilities. You will be answerable for the major things that go wrong, that is the expectation. If you are a committed and responsible DON who does a good job and competent, I dont see why you ought to worry of "being fired". Should something inevitable happens(beyond your control), and you are made to take the responsibility and are fired it would be deemed as unfair dismissal. If that happens you would be able to provide legitimate reasons to prove to the Company and if they still fire you there is the law to protect you. There is no such thing as unreasonableness... to fire someone the Company has to have valid reason, otherwise it wld be deemed as victimization. Speaking as a HR Manager and a degree in Industrial Relations with the assumption that the American law is not different from the British legal system.
  11. Your mum is an angel. Life outlook seems to look good for you after the storm is over. Be positive. don't be discouraged and have faith and you will sail through. Things happened for a reason. All the best to you.
  12. I started getting myself in preparation for applying into nursing in Jan this year. Started CNA in Jan, and taking 2 pre-req classes since Feb. I will enrol for 3 classes for summer. If i do not go into LVN this year, i will continue to take other pre-req/health science classes in fall and spring next year to get ready to join a RN program. I am glad that I hv made a decision to put my nursing studies into action. For me, starting a new career means starting all over as the degree I already have is entirely different and does not count. Everything I learn now is new to me. It is not easy ... alot of effort, time and commitment but I am enjoying what I am doing. Exams do freak me out and I think it is from the stress of getting good grades. I take it that if I want something so bad, I must be willing to pay the price to earn it. So I am investing my time and effort in a career that I know will bring me a whole lot of meaning and purpose in life.
  13. I am sorry to read your story. I admire your bravery, honesty and your selflessness to share your story on this website. I hope many women will learn from your bad experience and avoid being in a similar situation. My prayers are with you and your husband. Hope he will be strong and wise enough to realise that it was not your fault and that he will be able to give you emotional, moral and spiritual support during your time of need. May God bless you and family.
  14. I am 48, just started my education in nursing. Doing CNA and a couple of pre-reqs. I know it will take a lot of perserverance and determination. I look at it this way. Being new in this country, either I continue in the career path I was in, and get a good paid job or do something that I know I will fulfill my purpose in life. I hv 20 productive yrs b4 retirement, so i decided to invest some 5 yrs to prepare myself to go into a profession that I believe is a calling. Money or job satisfaction. I chose the latter. I get discouraged when I think of how old I will be be when I become a RN, but I am not letting that deter me. Take a step at a time. I hv even dreams to go higher than a RN but right now I just concentrate on getting into a nursing school. (my options now is LVN in an Adult School or ASN in a CC, whichever offer comes). The journey to nursing begins with the first step. It is not easy, getting the momemtum of studying going takes time and discipline. Getting my brain to work and function satisfactory is something I have to work on. :loveya:
