Alternative nursing positions

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I am a nursing student graduating this December. The job market in my area is very competitive. I am wondering what are some alternatives to hospitals, nursing homes, home health, assisted living and, the health department? I'm not eliminating those from my job hunt, just wondering who else hires nurses so I can have all my avenues in check.

Case management for Insurance companies

Really ? My company requires a boatload of experience.

Really ? My company requires a boatload of experience.

Agreed. All the case management jobs I see require at least nursing experience, most require specialized nursing experience (ICU, Oncology, Home Health, Hospice), and prior case managing experience.

Always keep your options open and especially for a new grad you have to be flexible with the shifts, if they say only nights or evenings are available take it if it will help you gain some vital experience

Can you be too eager or flexible?

I was asked about specific shifts and told her each time that I was completely flexible and then got off the phone and thought "crap!!!!! I just screwed myself out of that interview" but then they called to schedule the interview...

Flexible if phrased in the right manner can work for you, if they ask you about a skill that you know show that you are confident, flexibility is very important to get in the door, however sell yourself and what you do know, once you are in the door someplace even if it is not ideal you will at least get a chance to use your skills, I know a nurse who has been a nurse longer than me, but she doesn't get to use certain skills because she doesn't work on a specfic floor often enough, if she had confidence in her experience she would be guiding me not other way around. I am per diem now because I want to go back to school, but I try to work whenever they offer me a shift because I want to keep my skills and gain more if possible

Awesome thanks for all the great input!

hello, all!

What about the doctor's offices and clinics? From what I understand if you go work for a doctor's offfice, your skill set is pretty much limited and it's hard to diversify yourself. I really don't know what to do as I need stable office like hours because of my child.

She is important to me, and yet I don't want to loose all those skills i worked so hard to gain in the nursing school ..:bluecry1:
