Alternative majors?! Out of motivation.

Lately, I've been feeling extremely discouraged when it comes to nursing. I don't feel like my grades or anything is good enough to get in to any programs. Everybody that I've talked to that got in had straight A's and over 87% on their teas. If I don't get in on my first round of applications, I decided to try to major in something else. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE nursing. The thought of doing that for the rest of my life makes me really happy but, I honestly don't think I will get into an BSN programs. A lot of people tell me "if that's what you really love, then keep trying". But I really cant afford to keep trying. I don't have that kind of time and especially money. Are there any other fields worth exploring? I am only interested in science/health related fields. Thank you!

Thank you so much for all your feedback so far! I have been consulting advisors and nursing departments for the past few months.

you never fail until you stop trying !!!!

Ok, you need to give us more info about your situation:

1. what is your GPA

2. do you have any volunteering experience?

3. are you considering only public schools or also private?

4. where do you live?

5. what about ADN in the community college?

1) So far I got a B- in Chem, B in Physio, and C in Micro but I'm retaking. Pretty sure I'll get an A in Anatomy. The other non-science GPAs so far I have 2 As and a C that I will retake. My overall GPA I'm not so sure of at the moment but for sure over 3.0.

2) I've volunteered over 60 hours at a pediatric doctors office obtaining vitals for children and babies. Also, I performed simple exams such as eye and hearing exams, and fluoride tests. I plan to volunteer at the same place again next summer!

3) So far only public because I don't think I can afford a private school unless they can offer me a lot of aid.

4) I live in northern California but I'm willing to relocate anywhere in CA!

5) Never considered that. I really wanted a bachelor's degree. Also, I don't know much about ADNs. I heard they don't make much.

Thank you

You are an angel from god because i am having the same problem! And i have been so depressed

I am currently doing my pre reqs and i am discouraged. (Not getting A or B) I was thinking of minoring in sociology or something after i finish my pre reqs

My second option would be to return back to a community college and then to bridge

But whatever you do : do not give up! You were called into this for a reason and you will make it through school

Stay strong and positive! It doesnt hurt to do more than a few classes to raise grades . It will be very rewarding at the end, we are all in debts so dont worry about that

All the best

In general, ADNs make MAYYYBE a couple dollars less per hour than BSNs. At my hospital, it's a half dollar less.

Honestly, i think you will get admitted with all these info

Stop worrying :)

I thought you had failures and stuff lol but you have amazing grades. Keep up the good work

If you are in Northern California, have you considered attending a community college? There are several great ADN programs that you may have a better chance of getting into. An ADN is an Associate Degree of Nursing. Student's that successfully complete their ADN program can take the NCLEX. If you pass the NCLEX, you will have your RN license. If you want to go after your BSN at that point, you can bridge. From what I understand, the BSN programs in this area are HIGHLY competitive, with only the highest GPA's and TEAS scores admitted. As far as the CC programs, your name can be entered into their lottery if you meet their minimum GPA, which I believe is a 3.0 for admission. Good luck!

Thanks for the information! I will take it into consideration. So do RNs that obtained an associates get the same job as RNs that holds a Bachelors degree? I just always had this preconceived notion that associates degrees will get you only average paying jobs and they don't get hired as often.

I really admire your positive attitude! The main reason why I didn't consider getting an associates in nursing is because my parents would be really ashamed of me for going to a community college (I have typical asian parents haha) and only getting an associates. They promised to financially support me for only 4 years exactly so that is what I meant when I said I can't waste time retaking tons of classes or waiting to be accepted :/

Thanks for the encouragement!
