Hi, I started ns last week! The reading seems endless. I have been highlighting in the book, but to go back through the stack of books to find highlights seems time consuming. Taking notes seems time consuming. I am looking for some tips. Thanks!

Are your lectures on Powerpoint? Do they send them to to print out?? My printer will accept 3X5 cards so I print the slides out on those.
If they just give you a list of course objectives. I use those for my reading, and take notes on the course objectives.
Reviews and Rantionales for Fundamentals is a great book for studying with.

I use flags on my books to help me locate key points, important tables or information I am sure will be on the test quickly when studying/reviewing. Like you, I started out by highlighting a lot and then quickly realized that I would never have time to go back and review it all. The tabbing really seems to work well for me and I use a different color for each test so I can keep them straight and it makes studying for exams and the final pretty simple. Congrats on starting NS and good luck!

When I started ns I sincerely believed that I could read each and every page that was assigned- found out that I would drive myself crazy and it is not possible time-wise. I study my professor's powerpoints and topics on there that are unclear, heavily emphasized by the prof, or a clearly going to be test questions I go to the book to read more thoroughly on. When I do have some time to read I ususally skim through the chapter, read the summary, and do some of the practice questions at the end of the chapter. I do know someone who is reading everything and has mounds of notes (most which aren't really necessary) who seems to be close to a nervous breakdown. In reality, it will take time and practice for you to develop a way that will fit your needs.

I am desperately trying to finish up a tad bit over 300 pages of one unit today and want to rewrite the lecture notes that I took.
I thought I had a lot of reading in 101, I am finding more reading in 201.
I am thinking that I am ready for Thanksgiving break!!
I never thought about printing my slides out on index cards!! What a great idea...not sure if I can figure out how to do it tho'. Hmmm...

I skim the reading and reading paying more attention to the things I don't know and skipping over what I'm familiar with. Once I have the lecture and the course objectives I'll go back and read the things I didn't quite understand.

Do your instructors give you any kind of outline? Ours do, and I concentrate mostly on that information. It seems to work for me. Don't worry, you will find your groove!!

I have been in nursing school since August. When I started out I was reading everything aside. Now I am not really reading at all and I am still making A's and high B's. I have found that application is a lot more efficient than just reading. I hope this helps. :)
