I am not ordinarily an emotional person. Today is the exception. I put considerable amount of work into bringing this health clinic out of the dark ages. I will not itemize everything done in my short time here, but it is more than has been done in many years.
My latest endeavor was to transfer immunization and screening information from paper to electronic records. I also figured out how to record individual visits and medication administration. I completed the whole school. It was quite an accomplishment. Today I was told we were not going to continue with computer charting. WHAT?!! After all the work I just put in?! You cannot be serious! Keep in mind, many others in our district are already switched over and there really is not any reason to continue with paper records.
I suspect the secretary and business manager have something to do with this decision. They pushed back when I showed them how to record office visits. It is the most efficient use of time, however whining ensued.
I cannot understand for the life of me why administration is content to accept the status quo. I have shown all the evidence on how the electronic system is really in our best interest. We already pay for this functionality so why not use it?
I am tremendously upset you guys. I feel like I am taken for granted and am not valued.
Thanks for listening.

Again with the "we are set in our ways" crap. I respect that my office ladies, both have been here for 20+ yrs but like you, I am so tired and frustrated at having to bring in reality of new technology and HIPPA laws etc. I pretty much have to wait for them to retire before I can bring this school into 2015 VS 1800's. I work in the mountains, and the people also don't get why just because Im the "Nurse" why can't I fix/diagnose their kids issues...

Do you guys still use carbon paper and mimeograph machines there?
Yep. I totally agree. I am not coming back here next year. There is no hope for change and I cannot work like this. They want a warm body. I can't live with that.
Not far from it! I even explained that if our visit logs were subpoenaed we would be handing over records for every student on the log, not just the one in question. Also, it doesn't help track data for individual students. If you want to figure out how many times one student came in, you have to flip through pages of paper to tally it up. Paper logs are also not very helpful in identifying trends..... It is ridiculous.

I'm sorry. I
t sounds like they are afraid of change. How about if you record the actual office visits yourself, instead of the secretaries? I do that. It's how I chart. I don't trust anyone else to document why a kid was here and what was done for him/her.
I am having similar problems will our school's cell phone policy, which exists on paper only. I have come up with several ideas and have had them not even entertained.

I am just curious..How does your office staff have any say on medical charting? The office people I work with don't have anything to do with it. (?)
Is there any way you can bypass them and just do it anyway?

The secretary and business manager only document when I am not here. I work 4 hours a day. They fill in the rest. Admin will not extend my hours.

I wish. The office staff has a lot of pull because they have been here a while. They do not understand what I do and neither does my Principal (shocker). The Principal said no.... The buck stops there.
What a waste of time and effort! This just adds to the growing list of crap I have to deal with in my little 4hr/day job.
Ohhhhh I see.
They are really behind the times. They could at least try it and see how it goes.
I'm sorry they won't be reasonable.
I agree. The fact they haven't given it any time to see how things work is even more frustrating. Nothing I can do. I'm at a loss.

That has to be totally frustrating! I am surprised the HIPPA information did not turn your Admin. No matter how much medical or common sense it makes, tis usually the liability card that gets em on board…
