Well the semester is winding down and not much more left. I'm curious to know how everyone's first semester went. Was is what you expected, did you enjoy it, hate it, complete opposite of what you expected? Just whatever you want to share now that we have all crossed that hurdle.
I personally had my doubts going in, I always wanted to be a nurse, but when the time came I didn't know if I could actually do it or if I would be any good. That's all changed! I love school, I've made so many friends and experienced so much in such a short amount of time. I remember my first clinical day, I thought I was going to puke my nerves were so bad. Now I have so much more confidence and know that I am making a good difference and the nerves have vanished. Except of course when the instructors are hovering over you at check off times. But anyways, that's my experience!

Love school, enjoy my classmates, wish we went straight through the summer instead of having it off. I am happier than I have ever been. Its been both harder than I expected in some ways and not as hard in others. I can't wait to keep going.

This is a great idea for a thread. I'm looking forward to reading everyone's replies I officially start in August, and I find this site so helpful to know what to expect of the program. It'll be great to hear about other people's first semester experiences and live it through them vicariously for the next 4 months I can't wait to start!

I, too, am winding down my first semester. I got a last minute acceptance to the program, so I was a bundle of chaotic nerves. But, once in class everything fell into place. I love school. I am having continual "social" problems with students in my class, which I wasn't expecting. But I am doing my best to ignore them, and let them think I-and other students-are not hearing the bad mouthing they are doing. It sucks, and makes me less excited about the program, but I just will hope I don't have to work with them! I've been LUCKY to maintain a high B average, despite not being able to study but for one day a week. I plan on getting a head start on the 2nd semester this summer. I am really looking forward to my next 2 years getting my BSN, and "shopping" for an MSN program. I love being in school!!

I had a lot of fun and made friends quickly :) The only thing I didn't like is that I wish I had gotten more hands on experience. But I am definitely looking forward to next semester!

this is a great thread!
i look forward to the responses.
We do go straight through the summer, not really looking forward to it since it's not the skill based (were doing patho and pharm) but then this fall semester is mother/ baby so I'm soo excited for that one!! We go straight through the summer, then fall, then spring, then were out that summer and graduate that fall. It seems pretty quick.

I felt the same way about first semester, felt like I didn't learn much skill wise besides on dummies and then second semester came and hospital clinicals and I felt like I learned more in one night then the whole first semester. (skill wise) So it should get better
Yeah, the only skills we've done on pts. is hygiene, shots, physical assessment and vitals. We learned several other things in lab, just didn't do it at clinical.

So far it's gone pretty well, but I still have several things in front of me before the official end of the semester. 2 more exams, a dosage competency (must have 100%) and a foley competency. So, ask me on May 11th, finals day!! LOL
We just finished our last check off this past Monday. This coming up Monday we're doing foley's and NG tubes, but don't have to check off this semester. So now I have my 5th exam. Standardized test and Final. But I'm ready for it! Goodluck to you! :)
