Air Force October 2010

Just wondering who all has/is submitting their application for the October due date for the AF for the up and coming boards?

Specializes in Critical care.

I'm currently in the same position. I'm still waiting to hear something from my recruiter. In a way, I'm a bit scared to call because I'm not ready for any bad news right now. I've spent most of my life wanting to join the AF but I allowed people to persuade me otherwise. Now, I'm only thinking of my needs and I need this. If I don't get in, I'll be very disappointed but sometimes things happens for a reason. From what I've read, we can't apply again if not selected? But suppose in 2yrs the market gets better for nurses, we still can't re-apply? What is everyone planning on doing from this point? For those who did get selected, congrats on ur new endevors!!!!

I was told by my recruiter that I can reapply as frequently as I want. I told him I plan on reapplying until I get in. He chuckled and said, "That's fine". I don't know why not being selected means you can't reapply. For instance: ICU. They took ZERO. So, that means even the most qualified in the world can't ever apply again? That makes no sense. The reason they took zero is because they needed zero, not because we were all crap nurses. The no-reapply rule makes no sense at all.

Thanks Danegerous ! Well with that being said, I guess I didn't get accepted because I was also applying for an ICU spot. This really sucks!:crying2: Well if I can still apply, then I will keep doing so until my packet gets selected also. What makes it bad for some of us is that some people are only joining because of the market, not because their hearts are into it. That's why it's hard for those wo really wants to join.

Specializes in cardiology, med/surg, endo/day surgery.

Dangerous and Tee byrd, I feel the same way as you both. My heart was in this and I had always lived life to please everyone else. I wanted to do this years ago. I don't have a lot of time, just a few years. The way this last year went (slow) and minimal people taken/chosen...I just don't know if this will happen for me. I'm 38 this comming April. We can only go in until 42 and with age...the harder it is to get fit and stay fit:) to meet their requirements q 6 months for the next 20 years. I will keep applying, also. It just worried me that my recruiter told me in her 3 years of doing this that NO ONE she has ever resubmitted has ever gotten in.

I noted that one that was chosen as an alternate here had their ccrn and worked at a VA hospital...obviously they are looking for a very high accuity nurse...beyond the BSN, ACLS, CPR stuff. I get my BSN in 2 weeks...and I really looked forward to enlisting and getting sworn in:( I'm debating if I should push forth to get the CCRN or start looking at different paths of nursing...sigh...

you know what? THIS has never happened before! (points to all of us in a sweeping motion). we can no longer go by what has happened in the past, we are 100% in uncharted territory.

and I don't wanna hear about "not sure if you're gonna do it again", you applied for the GD USAF!!! of course you're gonna do it again! because it takes a very special kind of nurse to get this far. and if you're gonna be 38 this year then damn! that's four more great years to get in. you didn't apply to the girl scouts. stand tall, pick your head up, and try again. we will be fighting for the very democracy and competition that allows them to turn us down.

This application process, the selection process, is all the America dream. if you want it, and you work until your fingers bleed, you'll get it.

I can only imagine when the three-star general I have waiting to commission me says those final words, nothing on this planet will have ever been earned more.

don't you dare give up on me now! this our emotional boot camp! MUST KEEP FIGHTING!!!

Trina.. I understand what your saying. My best advice would be to still try to get your CCRN (it doesn't hurt to have that under your belt) and to figure out where else you wish to do. As for me, I'm going to try to get my CCRN also and still see if I can get in but if not I'm still going to live my life... I know that when your mind is set on something it's hard to look past it at other options... I wish you all the best and don't give up.. When one door closes, another always opens.

I used a DVD set by Dr. Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio, the Kaplan CCRN reiview book, and the AACN Certification and Core Review book to study for my CCRN. The DVD set was excellent and quite helpful. I also obtained by CEN (certified emergency nurse) and I used the Kaplan book to study. Best wishes!

On a brighter (although completely inappropriate and sadistic note) with the brewing tensions in North/South Korea, maybe they'll need us sooner than we think!

True True...TRUE! Who knows? Here's a big clink of glasses to that! I know I want it and wanted it all year. If we did not get in because everyone was turned down due to high volume, well that's one thing. If we got turned down due to something else, I hope they do tell us and we don't just blindly keep applying only to get continually turned down. I don't think they do tell you a reason when you're turned down??? hmmm

I can tell you that no new nurse graduates went before this last board. The AF decided to have a separate NTP board. Our board was rescheduled for January and then cancelled altogether. They are not accepting any more applications for graduate nurses this fiscal year. There is a board in April, and they will back fill any NTP slots where people have dropped out for whatever reason. My packet is at the board, but the chances are very slim that I will be selected in April. I graduate in May 2011. My recruiter told me that if I am not selected there will be an NTP board in October for the next fiscal year, and we can resubmit my packet.

I am in the same boat with a lot of you. I just turned 41, and joining the Air Force is something I have wanted to do all my life. It just took me a while to get here. :( Best of luck to everyone!

I just talked to a health care recruiter and she said deadline is january 1st. She said she will contact me after the holidays since she is in the process of finishing some packages for the upcoming deadline.

I'm a 39 year old guy with 6 years critical care and a ccrn under my belt. I've seen a lot a few nurses on this post with more experience and credentials than me and get denied. can you give me some tips on how to get selected? how was the application process?

No tips to give at this point. The issues that everyone has been facing in the civilian world has finally caught up with the military and they just don't have the positions right now. They selected a ton of nurses last fiscal year and now don't have positions available. I believe the application process is the same for everyone. You complete the application packet, chief nurse interview, and then your completed packet in submitted to the review/selection board.

I would double check with your recruiter on the so called deadline. As far as what I have been told, there will not be a board in January and may or may not be a board in March. At this point, no one really knows. When they do their selections in Oct/Nov, they are doing their selections for the whole fiscal year. In past, they had many board reviews/selections throughout the year mainly because they didn't usually have many applicants during the Oct/Nov board. However, because our economy really stinks right now and everyone is having a hard time getting a job in the civilian area, many have turned to military nursing over the last year or so. So, the military has been getting an over abundance of applicants and being able to fill all of their open positions. I have been trying to get back in to military over the last 2 years (have had some not so great recruiters). My packet was finally submitted this fiscal year and I was not selected! So, here I sit having to wait again to re-submit.
