Air Force nursing FY2021

Published

Hello all,

I have looked all over this site in hopes of finding others that are getting their packets ready and are applying to the Air Force this fall. I have not found any recent threads on this.

I am applying for an ER spot. I have been a RN for 7 years and work in a Level II trauma emergency center. I have my MSN-Administrative Leadership and TCRN. Is there anyone out there that is also getting their packets ready for October boards? My recruiter told me that because of COVID everything has been pushed back and that boards will meet in October this year. He also told me that I would be going to MEPS and doing my medical in the next 3 weeks.

My recruiter also mentioned January 5th as a possibility, but told me it would be 2 more weeks until he would know for sure. Much quicker than I was anticipating as well. Does anyone want to create a facebook group so we can keep each other updated/etc prior to and after OTS?

I’m in for the fb group idea ?

I wasn’t given a date yet either. I’m supposed to have a meeting Monday with my recruiter to discuss. January is quick, I’m hoping for February at least. I’m up for the fb idea as well.

I’m currently in the Air Force reserve so not sure if that expedited my class date at all. But I like the FB idea too.

I haven’t received a date yet. All I was told is I should get orders in a week to a month, discuss OTS, save money, and go pick out some boots LOL. Luckily my spouse is AD. He told me to stand by for emails but I haven’t gotten anything yet. Last I spoke to my recruiter is when he told me the news. Interesting about joint assignments maybe taking longer! Our current DEROS is April 2023, hoping it doesn’t extend out. He’ll have been overseas for 8 years. (Love it! But our toddler hasn’t been to America yet to meet family). I saw the hospital here currently has 4 spots for ER nurses for my rank so crossing my fingers????. A facebook groups sounds like a great idea .

Hey all. Got the call too. There are already FB Groups for the Jan and Feb classes (I didn't check past that) so if you search Air Force OTS Class 21-02 for Jan and 21-03 for Feb you can jump in the groups already created. Interesting to hear about the mil-mil assignments taking longer to get. No date for me yet. Also interesting he told you a week to a month on orders. Hubby found out he was accepted around late March and they legit didn't cut and send him his orders about 5 days before he was scheduled to leave for OTS in late July!

Neat to see we're not the only ones jumping into the mil-mil space. And start saving money was probably the best advice you could have gotten with the next best (they seemed to have left out) is to buy your stuff before you go! Especially if you have access to the base to get it. It's apparently chaos at OTS in those beginning times when people are trying to get all the things they need bought and if you can have it all sized, bought, and tailored if need be before you go, you're just one step ahead and one less thing to stress about.

Definitely don't be surprised if your pay is all messed up (especially for the reservist coming active, I've yet to hear a story of a prior enlisted or reserve to AD actually having their pay done correctly while at OTS). My husbands was messed up for MONTHS. I don't know what we would have done trying to pay for all his uniform stuff, regular expenses, and the upfront cost of a cross country PCS if we hadn't had sold our house and had some equity to cushion the blow. SO SAVE NOW FOLKS! After that initial $1-1.5k drop on supplies that is ??‍♀️

Congrats to all and hope to meet some of you in the future!

My recruiter told me they try to cut orders a month before your class start date. And that yes, reservists usually get their pay screwed up for the first few months ?

Interesting!! Hopefully not the case but honestly I could see it. When we PCSd here my husband got sent TDY to the states so I had to drive /ferry solo to our next duty station and finance didn’t pay for our lodging for almost a year.

Yikes! I’ve been researching PCSing and I am SHOCKED at the thousands of dollars people are having to pay to move. Sort of mind boggling to think of the massive pay cut we take followed by that hit. Things that make you say ?. Looking forward to meeting everyone soon though! Maybe we can ride share to base ??

Yep, he knew I have an active duty spouse so told me to start getting gear with my husband. We have a clothing sales on base here. I got my OCPs Wednesday and name tapes ordered. Going back tomorrow to tailor them and buy more gear. Sounds like a zoo trying to buy the 100 item list at OTS. I plan on getting everything on here prior, especially with enough unknowns due to covid and 2 weeks of quarantine factors, it 1 less thing to stress about.

It can be crazy!! We definitely try to save up before every PCS. I was also pregnant at the time so it was wild ?. We have a lab and our friend just shipped their lab to the states for $4,000. ?

Yuk. Is the quarantine because you're coming from overseas? Or did they tell you all OTS people have to do that?

Only applies to people out of country ??. I haven’t gotten any official guidance yet but on the OTS website it still states all international travel have to do 2 weeks of quarantine on arrival with current covid restrictions. So far that’s been the same rule for us here anyone leaving the country on return from deployment/emergency state side travel etc they have to quarantine for 2 weeks. Hoping the covid restrictions get lifted though so we can all have families at our graduations.
