Air Force FY 2019

I'm just curious if anyone else is applying for the Air Force FY 2019 boards as FQ that start Oct 8th? I am going in as clinical nurse but have ER experience.

You're very knowledgeable, are you an Air Force Nurse?

Yes, I'm a 46N3E (ICU nurse) for the AF.

Awesome! Do you have any words of advice for someone applying? Do you like it more than civilian nursing or is it just different?

They like people who plan to stay in the AF for the long haul (20 years). If that's the case, I would definitely emphasize that in your essays and interviews. Along with that, you should explain how you are integrating the AF into your long-term career plans: for example, I plan to apply to AFIT and go back to school to become a CRNA in the AF.

I like parts of it and dislike others. You essentially sacrifice a significant amount of personal freedom for an equal amount of new opportunities that you would not get outside of the AF. For example, I once traveled to SE Asia as part of an international medical conference.

Jfratian,

That's great. I really hope I become an Air Force ICU Nurse. Do you have an idea of how many airmen get accepted into the AFIT for CRNA? Is it very competitive?

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

Yes, CRNA is typically very competitive. The numbers of ICU nurses that they send to CRNA school vary widely based on retirements and separations from year to year. Sometimes they send most people who apply, and other times they send almost nobody.

I hedge my bets by trying to complete an MSN on my own time prior to applying. We'll see if it works out for me.

Thanks for the advice!

Thank you very much for the information and good luck on your application process.

What would you say is a competitive GPA for applicants? My BSN gpa is 3.9 but my cumulative is 3.7.

I'd say 3.7 on a 4.0 scale is competitive. The AF will look at all your transcripts and correct your numbers based on a 10 point scale. I know some schools have an A+ that gives them a 4.3 in some classes; their GPAs will be reduced. Other schools have 7 point scales (where a 92 is a B+); their GPAs are increased. I don't know exactly what classes they include in their corrected GPAs. They definitely look at everything post high school to some extent, because they requested a transcript from a community college where I took only 2 classes (both nonsense communication classes that had nothing to do with nursing).

Thanks a lot for all help!

I have applied for OR the anxious wait is on!
