Ahhhh the stress of getting into nursing school!!!

Published

Is anyone else having as much trouble as I am trying to get into a nursing school!?!?!?!?

I feel like I am the only one getting denied by the schools I applied to!

It is the most frustrating and distressing process I have ever had to go through. Getting denied by schools that I have dreamed of going to for so many years makes my self-esteem go down the drain!

Giving up is not an option for me.... but I could really use some positive feedback as I wait for one final school to get back to me!

Thanks!!!!!

come to my school in Oklahoma. I got in. I don't believe its that hard where I live. It varies by the student demand where you live though. In California where I'm from they do a lottery and your chances only increase after the fourth year I think. Some schools enroll every 6 months and the one I got accepted to only does once a year. I screwed up my grades as a teenager and I can't go to university because they don't have academic forgiveness like the community college where I'm at.

Yea I'm in Illinois and every school I applied to had at least 500 + applicants : / My competition was high and I'm sure very tuff!! UIC in Chicago had over 1600 applicants and they only take 80!!! It's absolutely ridiculous! What school in Oklahoma?! That's a stretch for me since I'm a city gal lol but if it means I can start nursing school soon then I'm interested! I have 2.5 years experience as a CNA and home healthcare aide... I've finished all my supportive coursework and currently have a 3.0 ( it's not the best GPA). Do you think I'd get into the program your at based on the criteria?!

You'll have to check it out. http://northok.publishpath.com/Websites/northok/files/Content/557711/APPLICATION PACKET FORM 2010.pdf That's the application packet that details what they give points for. Generally you need 70 points to get in. 250 applied this last March and they accepted 100 students. There are 3 campuses and they take 100 students combined. It doesn't matter which campus you attend. I thought they took 33 from each campus, but that is not true. The tuition is cheapest at Tonkawa, OK. That is a long detailed story, but the rent is cheaper here too and the dorms are even cheaper. Its about $300 a month for an apartment. Dorms I have no idea. Worth the commitment though and they have a brand new nursing building.

Oh and the prices they state are overinflated. Its $85 a credit hour last I for residents. I think all u need is a drivers license though to be a resident. Its six months technically though.

Awesome! I'll check the school out! I really appreciate you giving so much detail.

Price is definitely an issue, so the cheaper the better! I let you know what I think after I take a look at everything : )

Thanks again!

I'm really here by accident. I own a home near Dallas and may move back. My ex moved up here and I followed to be closer to my kid. The more I looked into it I became more interested so I quit my job driving a truck over the road and went for it. I have read on other forums the nursing classes in Oklahoma are just easier. I know the prerequisites sure are easier than California. My sister is having a much more difficult time at San Mateo CC. She is only doing one class at a time so she always gets an A.

Living here kind of sucks with nothing to do, but it keeps you from being distracted from your schoolwork. As long as I have a Walmart nearby I'm usually pretty set and theres is one here. You'll have to let me know what you think. Can't apply until next March though. Some of the other schools like Butler in Eldorado, KS and OSUIT in Okmulgee, OK do new classes every six months though.

I feel your stress. I have a 3.4 and I am getting nowhere. Pretty much everyone that gets accepted to RN school here in western Wa needs a 3.9 (average). I just sent in my last application for this fall, fingers crossed. This last school takes people based partly on their essay and how they did in a nursing study skills class, where the instructors get to know you as a student (not solely based on gpa) so I have a little more hope for this one. Shockingly I am on the waiting list for a school in Bellevue WA (this school takes people based mostly on their TEAS scores and I did pretty well on that, not that I would ever want to take it again). I thought for sure they would just say no thank you, so if a few people decide to go to another school or drop out or don't do well enough on the essay test then I am in. The terrible thing is my anatomy and physiology classes expire after summer quarter, that will be the 7 year mark since I have taken them and I know lots of school they need to be within 5 years.

We can do it... eventually!

Another option is if you were to come here I am on the waiting list for the LPN School at the tech center. They are supposed to make students attend more hours of school and expedite the classes a little. They may increase class sizes too. I was on the wating list for that too while I took my prerequisites. That was easy to get on the waiting list though. I just took a test. I'm pretty good at intelligence tests though, cuz I'm smart. Here's the link for that school. PioneerTech > Home

I really wanted to take the baby steps and work my way up from LPN. I heard you get more hands on training and I thought I would enjoy that a lot more. I decided to go to the community college though because there was no sense in wasting time waiting forever when I could just be a RN.

You are not the only one! If you are scouring the message boards and see a lot of people getting in, thats because some of the people who don't get in don't like to admit it. Thats how I felt. I saw so many people waiting to hear from schools and then when the letters went out it seemed all of them got in except for me!

Keep trying though! I finally got accepted after what seemed like FOREVER.

Goodluck!

Yea I know a few people who have done the LPN prior to the RN... now they are going back to get their RN. I could do that but I honestly want to just get my BSN right away and not have to worry about going back to school unless I want my masters later down the road.

It's a lot to think about and a lot to figure out, but I am just crossing my fingers that this last school I applied to accepts me.. Otherwise I am going to have to start looking in other states! I haven't had the chance to check out the school you are talking about.. I'll try to do that now so that I can maybe have some sort of back up plan.

Is that program an associates degree that you are referring to?

Thanks for the feedback! It makes me feel better knowing that I am not alone in this process!

I am still waiting to hear back from one more school... I'm praying that I get in! I really would like to get my BSN right off the bat as oppose to getting an associates RN or an LPN. My only other option if I don't get in would be Chamberlain... I don't know much about that school, but I can't wait any longer to be in nursing school (and it's a BSN program)!!

Good luck! You have a better GPA that I do so I think you will get into this next school your waiting for!

I had to take the TEAS exam for one specific school I applied for, but I didn't apparently score "high enough" to get into their school. All the other schools I applied to took GPA's of 3.6 and higher : (

I unfortunately don't have a high GPA which is a downfall when applying to nursing school. I really hope that I get into the one last school I applied to otherwise I will have to turn to Chamberlain! I don't know anything about that school but I would have no other choice.

Good job making that waiting list by the way! That's a plus for sure! I wish I had that to lean on : ( The only school I applied to that had the option of a waiting list was UIC Chicago. 1600 applicants applied for the Fall 2012 semester... Only 80 were chosen and 70 made a waiting list. Nursing is definitely a hot major right now!!!!!
