Any AGNP with a specialization in HIV? It appears there is a great need. Few schools offer the specialty, How is the work environment ? getting into a specialty practice? Most go into infectious disease practice?

See if you can do clinical rotation in a HIV clinic or health department. Some HIV clinics function as ID/HIV and PCP for patients based on funding so you may have enough crossover to meet any primary care clinical needs as well. Contact these clinics early as paperwork and length for response can be long (Health Departments).

It's a unique challenge working with HIV clients. If you cannot rotate with a clinic, you can always inquire about shadowing or volunteering to gain exposure and experience.

I don't specialize in HIV care, but I am an initial point of contact for a fair number of these patients, seeing as I work at Planned Parenthood. There is a shortage of HIV specialists. I would love to see more NPs doing it, and I personally feel like it would be a very fulfilling job.

Just a month or two ago, we finally adopted a Prep protocol (had been in the works for almost a year), and I am so thrilled to be offering this service. The uptake has been impressive. One day, we won't need HIV specialists anymore. I hope.
