at what point can you work legally?

Do you have to pay your fee to the state and once the check clears you are legal. I just don't want to get in trouble and I'm not sure who to contact.

Once you pay the $200 to take the NCLEX you need to pay the state their fee in order for them to send you your lisence. In PA the state fee was $35. I paid that the same time I paid to take the NCLEX. If you paid to get a TPP you can legally work as a GPN or GN until you take the NCLEX. Have you already taken the NCLEX??

Completely depends on the State: practices vary. Some states will allow you to work as a GN (graduate nurse) under a temporary permit ($35 in NY) until you pass the NCLEX and get an actual license (fee for that: $135).

In States that allow you to have a temporary permit first, you just take the NCLEX and your permit gets replaced with a permanent license (assuming you've paid that fee as well up front). No lapse. In states where you cannot work with a permit as a GN, you must obtain the actual license number before you can legally work as an RN (assuming that's what we're talking about here...?)

This looks similar to CA LVN license, am I correct? You can get hired, but you need to have at least a license number assigned to you to be licensed.

For specifics, check th website for your state Board of Nursing.

In CA, you do not pay for the license fee, until you have received notice that you passed and have sent in the $100 fee.
