Aesthetic Nurses Out There???

Specialties Aesthetics

Published

I am finishing up LPN school and will graduate at the end of June. I am currently an esthetician and wanted to get into aesthetic nursing. I have not run into anyone in the area that I live in to find ANYTHING out about this field. I am wondering what the job duties would be and what I will be limited in doing being an LPN. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Thanks!

What area are you in?

Im going back to school in fall to become a nurse but my current/past career is/was in Medical Aesthetic Management & Consulting.

Tell us some specifics in what you type of job/ duties you are thinking you'd like to persue and i'd be happy to give suggestions on how to go about it.

Side Note:

A key skill or attribute to have is being great with injections and with that you'll be a natural when training to administer aesthetic injections (i.e. fillers, botox, etc).

But like I said, how you go about getting what you want really depends on WHAT exactly you.. so let me know.

Hey healthyhere!

I have read all of your posts and you offer really GREAT information! I desperately want to enter this field, but am having difficulty finding a starting place. I am in Texas. I have inquired about positions at 2 different medspas, but one only hired LVN's (I'm assuming they can pay them less) and at the other one, the doctor did ALL procedures herself....she thought it was a liability to let RN's do procedures. So, where would you suggest the BEST kinds of places to START this search again? I would appreciate ANY information you can give me!!!! Thanks so much for your valuable info and good luck in nursing school!!!!!!!!!!

I live right around Michigan/Ohio border. I am planning on getting dual licensed as an LPN, and am also going to be dual licensed as an esthetician (which I am currently licensed in just MI). I was wondering what my limitations are as an LPN. I wasn't sure if I was able to do injections? My perfect job would be to find a plastic surgeon to work for that had own practice where I could do nursing duties, and aesthetic medical procedures that I could not do just being an esthetician, but also doing your typical facial, hands on therapy, peels. I am basically open to whatever I can legally do. I love learning about skin care. It seems to be a gray area, when trying to find out what I can do and what a physician would have me doing if hired. Then I am also wondering what the pay would be like, or if it would be commision while doing facials, hourly if I was doing more nursing type duties. Sorry, I know this is a lot of questions, but you seem very knowledgable. Thanks in advance!!

Hi Anne,

I need to familiarize myself with the restrictions (if any) when it comes to LPN's - i've only dealt with RN's in the past, however i can easily find out what the difference is when it comes to aesthetics.

As far as WHERE to start.. well as long as you have atleast 1 year experience in nursing, you should be able to start lookng for jobs now.

Seeing how Texas is HUGEEEE (lol), what metropolitan area are you in and i can see if what i can find for you.

Basic job searches for right now, will atleast give you an idea of what is available, for whom and what certain employers are looking for.

For example i really quick took a brief search and found this for you:

http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/job-JZZ8O2D1HM0;_ylt=Ap9UmyfkLNWMHxt0x8n9CXv6Q6IX?search_url=%2Fjob-search-l-TX-k-medical%2520spa-m-1

Again, i havent a clue if its in your area and i dont know anything about that particular employer, however if it is something you want to persue, im happy to give you some pointers on what to say during an interview :D

Fyi - I'd be prepared to keep your current nursing gig, while starting part time when getting into aesthetics.. simply because 1. You might not like it or (very common) you may really dislike your employer 2. They may low ball you when first starting out simply cuz THEY CAN and it may be worth it for you if they are going to train you on all the equipment and procedures. But you dont wanna go broke in the process so keep your hospital job :nurse:

I'll check some other things for you too...

Just let me know the area you are in.

Hey there! I am not actually an LVN, I am an RN. I was just reading all of your posts and happened to reply to the LVN one.....oopsie! So, any RN tips you have would be really fabulous!!!! I live between San Antonio and Austin, Tx. I have been a nurse for 12 years and I am definately sure this is the area I want to get into! I just don't know where to start! Thanks so much! Anne

HEALTHYHERE -- I am a RN in Michigan who is starting a Non-surgical cosmetic enhancement business (botox, restylane, sclerotherapy, mesotherapy). Would love to talk with you and see if you can answer some of my questions. Feel free to send a private message to me.

HI Everyone,

I am a RN in the Boston Ma area and am looking to get into medical aesthetics. I do have an esthetic license- I have looked and applied to some jobs but not getting any responses. I also want to do laser treatments as well.

any suggestions ??

I am just having a hard time finding a job- and am wondering if I need to go back to school

Hi! I have been an RN in oncology for 12 years now and hoping to get into medical aesthetics. I would love to find employment with training on the job, however, I know that the pay is very small. I was thinking of taking the certification courses (very expensive), but may be well worth it if I were to go into business with another nurse performing these types of aesthetic procedures.

I do have a doctor that is willing to be the medical director but just wondering if you could offer any insight on how to really get this thing started and off the ground? I know nothing about the business side of things. I live in Philadelphia, Pa. Any advice?

Margo

Hi again! I am now officially an LPN. I am getting prepared to begin finding places to interview. I want to work for a plastic surgeon/medical spa type of facility. I am wondering if anyone can offer me some advice about what type of pay to expect in this field?? I don't want to jump at the first offer I get and end up being underpaid. I have done that enough in my life!! I am going to be looking for work in either Michigan or more likely probably Ohio (Toledo). Also being an LPN, what would my job duties be in this line of work?? Any info would be great thanks!!

hello belzbubba22! pay in the aesthetics field can vary by leaps and bounds. i was paid similar to how an esthetician was paid...booked rate, non-booked rate and 10% commission (net not gross--it makes a difference) on products- not services. not a very good deal, but not bad for just starting out. after i got great experience and made some connections in the biz i was in talks with a cosmetic dentist, whose wife was an md, that wanted to do a start up in his office that was offering me quite a lot with commission on products and services. some aesthetic nurses work commission only.

pay is going to vary from facility to facility. i would recommend that you find a place that will offer you base pay plus commission for product and services--that will help you make more in this arena. if anything as long as you get your feet wet and network, network, network there are ways to do very well in this field!

as far as pay in plastics vs. medspas. i spoke with a rep in my area and he stated that i would make more in medspas than in plastics. yet i have a friend from another state whose friend worked in a plastics office who received good pay, a yearly christmas bonus paycheck, and the doc even sent his whole staff to hawaii along with their significant others. so whose to say?

i have found what i absolutely love to do.:redpinkhe hopefully you will find the same in aesthetics! hope this was somewhat helpful.

Thank you for your input. I was afraid of that, basically nothing black and white to go from. I am passionate about this field and hopefully I will land something that I am satisfied with. Thanks again! I have sought out the first place I am going to start and the funny thing is that it is a medical spa owned by a plastic surgeon that also does sx there. So, hmmm...I wonder what the pay is there?? I will update.
