AE MSN at UT Austin Summer 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Anybody out there applying to the UT Austin AEMSN program for summer 2012? Haven't seen any posts about our group of hopefuls yet.

What about Human Heredity by Cummings?

Which class is Jarvis' book for? Is this for summer or planning ahead to fall?

Summer, it's used in the Fundamentals course. But it's a book you'd definitely want to hold on to in the fall and spring semesters rather than sell back.

And yeah, we used Human Heredity by Cummings for the Genomics course.

If you go here:

http://www.universitycoop.com/ePOS/this_category=838&store=108&form=shared3/gm/main.html&design=108

type in the course schedule it'll basically tell you what books you need.

How about Ignatavicius?

Oh, I see what you meant. We used Lewis's 8th edition. Are they using Ignataviticus or whatever for your cohort instead?

Not sure, really. Since we don't have the syllabi out yet, it's hard to tell. The reason I asked was because almost all the syllabi I looked at from 2010 mentioned that author's textbook.

Also, is it the 9th edition of Cummings?

never mind...i found it. :)

Cummings is expensive. Unfortunately, unless I'm reading it wrong (may be!) as I look at the course descriptions, many of them do not list the book. I am a plan-ahead-person, but I'm afraid of buying things I don't need. This Cummings book is listed for the first summer session. Am I looking in the wrong place, because I don't see any other specific books? I know that you all mentioned Jarvis.

I don't want to picture us...finding out at orientation what we need, then shuffling us over to the coop to purchase. I realize some items (scrubs) are not negotiable, but some things (books) we may find cheaper somewhere else -- given the time. Ugh.

I don't know how it's going to be for your cohort. I can't remember correctly, but most of the books we needed, we got the lists for either at orientation or in an email a few weeks before that. (Don't quote me on it, though, since my memory's hazy.)

Some books just get used more than others. For the Genomics course, Cummings was the textbook; I don't think we even had a textbook for the Aging & Development course that came right after Genomics. If they're on your syllabus, I'd recommend getting the Fundamentals of Nursing book, the Med-Surg book for Adult Health (are they not using Lewis for your cohort? Dang. I'd be surprised!), and the latest edition of the Jarvis book (as well as the lab manual).

Definitely, definitely, definitely buy a drug guide for nurses. No question that you'll use it! I personally own Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, 12th ed.

I think you can save a ton of money if you just buy them from Half.com or some site like that. I did that for several books and saved a lot personally.

As for materials... hmm, there's bandage scissors, Litmann stethoscope, pen lights... we didn't have to buy a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) or reflex hammer, though, since those we could just check out from the Learning Center/library...

Definitely buy the books from half.com, abebooks.com, and even amazon has some good deals on books. I bought the Cummings book for $71 from half.com (for sure on the price, not so sure on the site...) The trick is to get the international version. Same book, different cover, less than half the price! Waiting until next paycheck to get Jarvis and Lewis!

What's the book we'd need for Fundamentals of Nursing? I thought it was Jarvis...

When I took Fundamentals of Nursing, I remember using Potter & Perry's "Fundamentals of Nursing" and Jarvis's "Physical Examination and Health Assessment"
