AE MSN at UT Austin Summer 2012

Published

Anybody out there applying to the UT Austin AEMSN program for summer 2012? Haven't seen any posts about our group of hopefuls yet.

Yeah, princerox - I almost got chills reading your last post!!

Hey, we all already have our bachelor's degree, right? So, it may not be a BSN, but it is a BS or BA equivalent. Plus, we will have our RN. That's even better! AND enrolled in graduate school on our way to a MSN - even better!!

Are you still enrolling orchidgal?

I think what I will do is apply for financial aid and see how much grant/ scholarship money that the school will offer me. Unfortunately I don't have family in Austin so I'll be on my own when it comes to living expenses meaning that I will have to take out loans for living as well as tuition. I know nursing is a good profession but I am thinking realistically of how much debt I may be getting myself into.

What about you, LizHope?

And you, Eastsider? I know you were Adult Health Teaching, like me. Right?

I think I'm going to enroll..you?

Yes, I am. We got a few general emails from the coordinator (J. T.) to confirm completed or pending prerequisites, estimated tuition fee link that I think we may already have seen, and who to contact for compliance questions. Not really anything new. I don't know if these email just went to those who have already confirmed they are attending or to everyone. First day is confirmed to be May 31, with an orientation day before that (date not yet set for that). The summer course schedule will be posted online on March 27. The scholarship committees have not met yet. I need to do the first aid, cpr, aed training and I think I'll do it all in one shot rather than two split up sessions to get it done in March. These months will go by very fast.

I have accepted--Adult Health Teaching track. I'm also just waiting for the follow-up e-mail regarding compliance. As I'm in Austin, I'm going to register to take the Heartsaver First Aid and CPR with AED through Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services on the 3rd Saturday in March (17th). It's an all day class. If anyone in Austin wants to take it, the contact info is:

John Villanueva, BS, NREMT-PCPR

Program Coordinator

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services

Professional Practices and Standards

I'm not sure how many spots there are, but it's real convenient to my location/schedule

I finished my pre-requisites in the fall and got to drop some unnecessary courses for the spring. Consequently I feel a little 'light' in my schedule right now. Probably a good thing, with what's coming around the corner. I was wondering if anyone in the thread has taken or would consider taking a CNA class? I may do that, in the hopes of getting PRN Nurse Tech work during the first year. I think this does two things: gets me more hands on/on the floor experience, and, of equal importance, it may give me a inroads to an RN position. It's a way to help assuage some of the fears (which I share) about the job market recently expressed on the board.

Anyone (locally or otherwise) have good experiences with CNA courses?

That's exactly the class (for CPR, etc.) that I had my eyes on and I have emailed them to see about registration/payment. I may see you then!

Since I am still working full time, I do not plan to do any CNA classes at this time even though it sure sounds like a good idea.

Hey everyone- has anyone made a FB group for AE students yet? If not, I will go ahead and make one today. :) Also, if my Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR, AED, First Aid cert) is valid through November... is that okay? I don't need to get certified again before the start of our program, right?

I played email/phone tag with Mr. Villanueva today, and he does not think the 8-hr class mentioned above is entirely appropriate for nursing students. So, I think I need to check into it more before it's a go.
