Advice for someone brand new to Nursing.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello!

I am brand new to the Nursing industry. I begin pre - nursing school in August and I just want to get some advice for success in school and as a nurse. What books, videos, sources, etc would you recommend?

As a fellow prenursing student, all I can recommend at this point is using YouTube for videos and animations to help illustrate difficult concepts you will learn in the science classes. Seriously! And it's free!

Just your text books really are fine. I loved the clinical sized versions though of the texts for times when I just wanted to main facts. A few other books I used in addition were tabers cyclopediac, stressed over nursing drug math, and my old A&P books.

HAHAHAHA...YES!! I found a couple cute videos on cellular respiration, thanks to YouTube!!

I recommend finding NCLEX books and try to answer as many nursing questions as possible. Nursing Tests are very different than any other type of test that you will take in college. I was absolutely shocked the first time that I took a nursing test. I would recommend getting Saunders NCLEX-RN Examination- 4th edition. It has a lot of info that you will need in nursing school and will help you be prepared for those nursing tests. It also has a disc with it that has hundreds of test questions that will help you a lot (or at least it helped me.) Good Luck :D

Oh Dawn, yessss how did I forget to mention my most favorite book ever! "Test success for nursing students". I let so many people borrow that and it helped each one!

The OP is starting pre-nursing. Isnt it too early for NCLEX questions?

If you haven't already, try to get some time in a real patient care environment. Volunteer at a nursing home or see if any hospitals in your area will let you shadow. Make sure you know what you're getting into and that it's something you want to do.
