Advice on Preceptorship Options...

Published

Hi everyone,

I am faced with the task of picking placement for preceptorship, I have to choose 3.

For those who have completed this, or can advise on this, what area do you think is best to start out in?

I've heard many say Med-surg or Tele, but I'm not sure why? What's out there?

Any info would be great, love to hear your opinions, thanks! :)

There are several ways to approach preceptorship selection. For example, you could choose units that will provide a lot of education/learning opportunities, or you could choose units that you are personally interested in. You must decide what is best for you.

Personally, I chose 3 units that I had always found fascinating. Fields that I could see myself working/retiring in. This gives you a chance to experience what life would be like working on that unit. Also, as an added bonus, you could potentially be hired as a RN after your preceptorship.

On the other hand, choosing units to gain experience is beneficial for both your future board exam and your career.

If you're lucky, you may choose a unit that provides both experience and is on your list of interests. Places like a med/surg floor, the ED, or an ICU offer plenty of learning opportunities.

It's up to you to choose where you want to be! Consider all your options. Explore what your interests are. Emergency? Cardiac? Neuro? L&D? There are plenty to choose from!
