Adult nurses wanting to work in the USA..

Hello all

I have been reading many of the posts on here about adult nurses who want to go work in the usa, but who are having difficulty because they lack hours in certain areas of nursing.

There is a place called Langara College in vancouver canada, it has an excellant course specifically for those nurses who need to make up the hours, this may be a bit long winded way around but it can get you what you need... it lets you take mini courses in paeds , obstetrics and mental health, each course has theory and clinical components, you can take the theory part of each course at home via distance learning and then once you have done all your theory you will sit an exam in your home country, upon passing they will let you proceed to go ahead with the clinical part of the course in which you will have to go spend approx 3 weeks in the designated clinical areas, to achieve the clinical hours you need, the clinical aspect is done in vancouver! after this course you will have the required hours you need to be able to register as a nurse in vancouver.... this is the way i am planning on doing it, as I have family in vancouver so i do not mind working there for a short while, the advantage is then i will have the required hours for applying to do the NCLEX .... Anyway I just thought I would share this info with those who wishto know where to make up hours from...because I can tell you now its going to be very hard trying to find a place in the UK! .. if anyone wants more information, please contact me via a pm, or here.

Hope this helps!

Hi matt

I rang up about this course today..not sure how hopeful it sounds. O'Grady told me its for nurses who qualified years ago who cannot go back to their nursing school to make up the hours because of the fact that their school no longer exists... :( nicola told me to keep enquiring at different universities and I told her I had tried that and failed miserably, so she said she would pass on my info to another person who would get in touch.. so I will see what they say... will let you know what happens...

Hi Tina,

I recieved an email from the head of nursing at my university today and he reckons that i will have evcidence of exposure to the required areas from EU directives that are in our portfolio. do u have a portfolio at your uni? do you do EU directives? these will be applied to your transcript :)

Hiya matt

Your really lucky in that case, cov uni is sooo crap! I wish I had never enrolled there, we don't have set portfolio's to do which centre on different area's of nursing and we certainly dont work to the EU directives :( I hate being at cov...not too long to go for me though...

tina

Hey matt did you get that info pack from ogp? Did it have anything interesting in it?

Tina

Hi Tina,

No unfortunatly not as i was hoping, all the pack really included was the areas and hours that were required. Nothing about how we are supposed to do this except to contact your nursing school. There is a presentation that ogp are doing at the Burlington hotel in bham city centre though which i might go to.

Hi Matt,

May I ask what the specific hours required were? I am studying at Staffordshire University. I am in my 3rd year and hoping to get in peds, psych and maternity in my elective - if I can!!! Maybe that will count towards the hours I need. They introduced the EU directive too late for me but maybe I can arrange to do it somehow - I think it's just a workbook that students have to do in their own time. They are very nice here and I reckon they would help me get the hours if possible.

I am heading for WA state - one way or another...lol

Thanks for all your helpful info.

Hi everyone

Is there anyone out there who qualified in 1987.The CGFNS has accepted my papaer work but the California board won't as i can not produce a breakdown of hours. This is because i have been told that paper work in the uk only needs to be kept for 3 years. So I'm now stuck, can anyone help?

I qualified in 1979 and had trouble getting my transcripts. I eventually got them through the NMC (formerly UKCC). Apparently, if your nursing school doesn't have them, NMC has them.

Hope this helps :)

Here's a suggestion.......

Speak to someone at your training institution, ask if they could provide a 'course content' document. I did EN training in 1979 then converted to RN in 1994. The EN transcripts were long gone when I needed them, even NMC didn't have those, so I got my school of nursing to provide a document which stated what the course covered (number of hours theory & clinical in each area). This was supported by a letter from them stating that I would have had to complete these hours in order to qualify.

Worth a try :wink2:

The other problem the school closed down long time ago.So that training can be done at UNI. I been to the university to see if they have records . I even asked if anyone can give me a break down of hours of the course they run now. But I'm still waiting . I've even written to the chief Nursing Officer.

Same here, my school closed down, but I discovered that any info/files were accessible via the Uni's archives. Maybe I just got lucky, I found someone at the Uni who was willing to go that 'extra mile' to help me out. It took a while but I persevered. Don't give up, the info you need must be there somewhere.

Good luck :)
