Advanced degree with a felony

Published

I'm a practicing RN in Ohio. I have earned my BSN and would to advance my education. I have completed several classes toward my MSN, but I was convicted of 2 felonies while I was in school. Non violent, non drug related.

My license was suspended, I have a permanent restriction, in that I cannot teach, hold a position of authority (i.e. DON, ADON) or do home health.

My probation is up in a few days, but the permanent restriction will remain. The BON has told me there are no reasons why the see me unfit to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse.

Does anyone know of any online programs that might accept me? Should I give up?

Thank you..

You should check with you BON but I'm thinking it may be an issue. Also, you could be refused prescriptive authority and DEA privileges. Time to do your research.

As I stated in my original post, I have checked with the BON and was told there are no reasons why I would not be able to take my boards or practice as an NP

Again, you may pass your boards but be turned down for DEA. Not having a DEA # will prevent you from writing controlled prescriptions. At the very least, you may spend a lot of time and money only to have great difficulty finding a job. Good luck
