U.S.A. Massachusetts

HI everyone,

Im sure this question has been asked MILLIONS of times, but i couldnt find my answer, so im wondering if you could help me out! Im originally from mass, but moved to FL with my husband when he joined the navy. now that hes out, we'd like to move back. I recently graduated in May with my ADN, passed my NCLEX, but I have no experience except for of course clinicals.

How is the job market for new grads, and what is the base pay for ADN new grads? Im looking to work ANYWHERE in the boston metro area (north shore, south shore, downtown, metrowest)

Thank you sooo much! :nurse:

How can you not find the answer to this? All you have to do is look at almost any post on the MA forum and the question is answered repeatedly. No one is going to answer this post because it's been answered 1000000000000 times.

You're going to have trouble getting into a hospital without a BSN. However, there are many LTCs or smaller community health centers that would hire a new grad with an ASN. So, if you're just looking to get some experience and then move on, I would recommend that. Check out http://www.theagapecenter.com/Hospitals/Massachusetts.htm I literally went to every hospital's website and applied to every job I found. You can also check out mass.gov/det for up to date job postings. Hope that helps!

I am an ASN new grad and was able to get a job on a subacute floor of a LTC facility before I even passed my boards in June. I'm getting TONS of great experience, and if I ever decide to move to acute care, I think it will be very relevant. I am learning great time management skills and some of the things I do include G-tubes, J-tubes, IVF and IV Abx, complex wound care, PICC line care, CPM machines and many many other things. Also they are paying for me to get TPN and IV certified in a few weeks. Overall I'm really happy I started my nursing career there! The pay isn't great compared to hospitals but I end up working a ton of overtime so it doesn't end up being as low as I originally thought it would be.

phew, thanks for the hope, lol. ive been getting alittle discouraged. I really think i'd like to start off at a LTC facility so that i can get some experience on my skills before i work at a hospital anyway. Can you give me any advice on getting a job? where to look, resume techniques... ANYTHING?! lol

General advice: don't be picky. I actually searched the Medicare website for the best nursing homes in my area, the ones that had the highest grades from the state survey. That way I knew it was a good place for the residents to be, and thus a better place for me to be. Then I went to each website and searched for jobs. If there wasn't a career section, I emailed the contact on the website with my cover letter and resume, along with the job I was looking for.

In your cover letter, don't focus on your weaknesses as a new grad. Focus on your strengths as a quick learner, any awards or honors you've received, and any work experience that could be relevant, either in healthcare or customer service.

Honestly I think I was in the right place at the right time. My facility didn't have a careers section so I emailed my info to the director of nursing, who contacted me to come in a few days later. I was basically hired on the spot. Another great thing about Subacute/LTC is that they LOVE you for having an RN. While hospitals will make you feel like less of a person for having an ADN instead of BSN, you will actually be regarded as a nurse in LTC. I was contacted by three other nursing homes before deciding on the one I currently work, so my technique worked. Many other people in my class also ended up in LTC but thought of it as a last resort, so some of them were unemployed for a long time. Also think of a good reason for the question "Why do you want to work in Subacute/Rehab/LTC?" because they do want people who actually want to work there, and not as a last resort.

Try the Rehab Hospitals too. They hire New Grads.

Expect between $21 and $24 per hour. That is how much I was offered at several different LTC facilities around here.

21$/hour?!?! What are they paying their LPNs and CNAs?? OMG. :uhoh21:

I am a new grad LPN and am working at an ALF and started at 24.00/hr. I live in MA and work in RI, with differentials I'm making 25.50, I'm back in school working on prereqs to get my RN ASN.
