Admissions preferences

Greetings. This is my first post to this forum and of course is motivated by the desire for information, but I'd like to say how much I enjoy learning from everyone elses posts.

I'm applying to nursing schools right now for an accelerated BSN and on my first interview the interviewer kept talking about what a minority I was(being a white male this is the first time I had ever been labeled a minority.) It made me wonder if men are given preferences in admissions at nursing schools, if schools are trying to increase the number of males enrolled in their programs and take male applicants that normally wouldn't be accepted if they were females(I don't even know if this sort of thing is legal.) Just curious.

I've read on this site where someone who was male got into nursing school ahead of females on the waiting list. So it isn't unheard of.

I went to a first-come first serve school, regardless of minority status. Now they've gone competetive, but still don't think males get preferential treatment.

I'd rather see applications be taken into consideration equally regardless of minority status.

At my school it was based on ACT scores mainly, plus your GPA. Very little depended on your interview, as long as you made the impression that you'd make a good nurse. [They'd tell you point blank if you wouldn't]

When I went back to school 5 years ago they told me that men were no longer considered a minority in nursing. There had been a nice scholership for men in nursing at my school. by the time i was eligable for it they had done away with it.

Schools can change admission requirments to allow for more culteral diversity but I don't think that they can change them for individual programs.

At my school admissions were strictly by GPA of prerequisites.

I did notice I got more attention while looking for a job being a guy...seems like they like to have a few of us around :)
