ADHD child giving issues

So this new student came in late, she has been kicked out a lot of schools because of her behavior and the teachers are at their last wit. Same with the mother, she's at her last wit because of her behavior. She's taking medication, but it seems not to work.

I work well with her because we understand each other (I have ADD) but I see it both ways, from the adults and the child's perspective.

I'm not sure what we can do for her at this point.

I'm honestly not sure what happened but she's not here today. She's already seeing an psychiatrist but I'm not sure if I should report to her what just happened or not.

I feel your pain. We have a little one here in a similar situation here. We had to actually hire a 1:1 para for them, and it's helped tremendously with stopping most of the negative behaviors but if he isn't with the student, the student immediately starts to spiral back down. We also found out a lot more about what's going on at home than what was originally disclosed, which is why I am nervous about the long winter break coming up. I feel like all the hard work everyone has done will go right back down the drain and we will need to start again in January.

But all that being said. My only true role is giving meds. I do talk with the little one, and my office is one of the places that he has marked as a safe place for when he starts to loose control. So I do feel connected to his well being, but you cannot care more than the child's family. THEY are the one who need to keep looking for the right treatment to help their child. And they are the ones who have to stay compliant with it.

Sending hugs and positive thoughts your way.

Did you and or the Principal strongly suggest (read: insist) that her parents take her to the ER or a Pediatric Psych hospital when she said she wanted to kill herself?

If the parents picked her up, I'm sure they took her somewhere. It is really not your place to call the Psychiatrist.

I really like that you feel for this student and want to help her. But please don't forget your professional role and professional boundaries. It sure does sound like this student has some significant psych issues in addition to ADHD, and hopefully she is connected to services to help treat those issues. It will take more than a medication switch (I am assuming this is what you meant when you said "switch" in your most recent post) for this student to get the help she needs. Maintain your professional role!

I will thank you.

I wasn't aware of the issue until I saw the police and heard about it from some staff here. So by the time I was aware, she was already gone.

I would then follow up with the Principal to see if touch was made with the parent, and what is the status of the kid.

If they choose not to keep you in the loop, then just give the meds and step back, alerting the Principal if she expresses suicidal ideation again.

Good plan. I'll do just this.

Mostly my reasoning to help her is because I struggled a lot as a child with ADHD- Inattentive type. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in 4th grade and before this I endured a lot of hate from some teachers and a lot of my classmates. I remember being sad and coming home crying because I didn't have any friends and it didn't help with my 2nd grade and 4th grade teachers didn't help me and made things worse. The only god saving teachers were my Kinder, 1st and 3rd grade teachers and I still speak with them as an adult because my mother still works at my old elementary school 18 years later as a TA for Pre-K. Then after this, I struggled a lot as I get older socializing and such, and didn't make good friends until end of middle school and high school, and I'm still friends with a lot of them years later.

It was a hard road for me, but because of my determination and stubborness, I got where I am today with the support and love of family and friends, but I still have that scar in my heart on what I experienced as a child, and the emotions as well. So when I came to work here I noticed a lot of these kids and their struggles, so I opened my heart and office for them, when they need time of rest from that stress. A lot of them talk to me and I understand them and I try my best to help them. I guess I'm kinda of a medium between the adult world and the child/ADHD world and try to help them. I know I'm not a counselor, but we honestly don't have one except once a week and she only sees some cases. So the only people here who has the ability to change something for these students, is me and my Dean of Students, which is why if I have a student struggling with something, I let her know, but that's all I can do, which is heartbreaking to me, but when I hear they are getting some sort of help, I feel something will help these kids.
