Accreditation WCCCD

Published

I know this has been brought up before, but am looking to see if anyone has new info. Wayne County Community College is not accredited, with NLN, that is confirmed. Most Community Colleges in Southeastern Michigan are. I called the WCCCD Nursing department and inquired, they told me that national accreditation is not required only that they are accredited by the Michgan Board of Nursing. I also checked and determined that if Iwent into this program my education would be worthless in some states, since they do not have the National accreditation. I am concerned. I spoke with a friend who is in the Nursing Program at U of M, and was telling me they had a few students that came from WCCCD, and there nursing classes would not transfer to credits, because the lack of national recognition.

I am thinking I may just go to U of M and take out loans, and so forth, to pay for school, I would rather be safe than stuck with a Associates, that may not transfer well when I leave the state. If I am off, and have gotten bad information, please correct me, I would like to think WCCCD, is a decent school, why would they not be accredited, I heard they lost it back in 2001 or 2002, its been 4-5 years.

Why not reaccredited? Again any thoughts, good or bad.

Thanks.

If you take a look at Madonna University's BSN program, you will see that credits from WCCCD are transferrable to their school. WCCCD is accredited but just not nationally. Schoolcraft college has the same accreditation that WCCCD has but you do not hear a lot of people talking about that. I would call the university that you are interested in and check for yourself. Sometimes it is good to research information yourself rather than take the words of someone else. I hope this gives you some clarity and if not please do not hesitate to attend one of WCCCD's nursing information session to have all of your questions answered. I must say, the information session answered alot of my questions and most of what I heard from other people was completely untrue.

I attended one of those information meetings myself and did not find it all that informative. It basically covered what was in the info packets you can pick up at school. It was almost word by word of that info. So if you had read any literature that the nursing department had available, then you already knew most of that information at the meeting. She did say at the meeting that if you were planning any kind of military enrollment, that you would need to be a graduate of a nursing program that was accredited with the two associations.

I would love to go to U of M's program, but cannot afford the tuition or the gas to drive that far away every day. So if you are considering that route, consider how much it will cost you. I did attend a University close to U of M, and the drive was awful every day, not to mention I spent an extra 30 dollars in gas a week to go there. Then there was a parking fee at school, supplies you needed. When it was all calculated, the student loans were hardly enough money to cover everything and with the new changes being made to student loan paybacks, I suggest everyone be very careful in what they borrow. They are raising the interest rates once again and you could end up owing a fortune back to the bank when your done. Good luck though in whatever you choose. Once you pass your NCLEX, I am sure your officially a Registered Nurse, and I do know other grad's of WCCCD have gone on to obtain their BSN without a problem. So good luck.

Wayne County Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, 30 North LaSalle Street, Suite 2400 Chicago, Illinois 60602-2504, 1-800-621-7440 www.ncacihe.org

Yes the Community College is accredited as a catch all, my concern initially was which National Nursing body accredited the college specifically, neither the NLN nor CCNE accredited WCCCD. From what I gathered after allot of questions and research, this will only be an issue you if you want to work for Military/Goverment. Almost all Community Colleges in Michigan have the NLN and Universities have the CCNE. The accreditation just gives more options for employment, if you choose to go the VA/Military/Goverment route down the road. Hope this clarifies things abit.

I know I will do a BSN completion and that will take care of it. However I dont have the money to pay for the stright BSN right now sooo I am doing ASN first then get a job, they pay for most of the BSN and then I can do whatever I want to do, no big deal.

This is my plan as well, so the degree from WCCCD really would not matter.

Yes it does and I was already aware of what WCCCD's accreditation meant.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone didn't, just passing on information I received. Maybe it can clarify for those in the future that have issues/concerns.

I think getting the ADN first is a good idea, especially when funds are tight, that way, get the RN, get a decent job, and work on through to the BSN. Just my opinion. I am not knocking WCCCD's program, not at all, at first my concern, was warranted as anyones would, but since I have gotten much clearer information these last few weeks, I am a little more at ease, knowing what it entails and so forth.

I'm glad you're clear on it. The question came up in one of my NUR classes just last week. Just WHY isn't WCCCD accredited by the NLN? We were told WCCCD is working very closely with them...whatever that means. It's the NON ANSWER that makes you a bit anxious about the whole situation. We are working very hard for this degree that some have said "doesn't really matter." It matters, & so does the reason they aren't accredited. What's the big secret?

Does anyone even know if WCCCD is working on reaccreditation?? If so, how long does it take before they can be reinstated?? As I have said before in previous posts, I'm not really concerned because I plan on going on for my MSN, but it would be nice if they gained it back. This would allow me to move out the state when I graduate versus having to wait until I receive my BSN.

The Government only requires you to be a licensed nurse. and the Military doesn't accept Associate Degree's... So the accreditation doesn't matter, why does this issue only comes up about WCCCD..:banghead::argue:
