Acclerated BSN programs in CA

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone out there is in an accelerated BSN program in California? If so, how do you like it? If you could, would you do the 2 year RN route? I have a BS in biology and am debating on which route to take Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Is there anyone out there enrolled in the CSU Sacramento Acc BSN program? Please help. :)

I believe that CSUS starts a acc BSN for people with a BS in another field, it starts this summer.

i'm pretty sure samuel merritt college in oakland has an accelerated BSN program for people with BAs in other fields. it seems SUPER difficult to get into, though.

one thing to keep in mind with the "two year RN route" (if you're referring to getting a "two year" ADN)... it's almost NEVER just two years. depending on the amount of pre-reqs that you have done & if there's a waiting list or not, it can take longer than a regular BSN program.

there is an accelerated bsn program at SJSU if you already have a BA or BS. It is 18 mos long I believe AND you must sign a contract to work at their affiliated hospital for almost 2 years. But- the program costs very little due to this commitment- look into it.

This will in effect be the second year for the CSU Sacramento accelerated program... the first year it was "entry level master's", but it's going to be the same program, just with a BSN endpoint.

Thanks for your input. I have not heard about the SJSU acc BSN program, so thank you. I will look more into the program. Also, I've checked out Samuel Merrit, but the cost is too expensive for me as I am still in debt for student loans. Thank you for all your help!

Will the people that started ELM get their masters or did they cancle that part as well?

The ELM group at Sac State will get a BSN at the end of summer and then continue into the masters this fall as originally planned. I didnt realize that the accelerated BSN program was for people with a previous BS degree.

Amy, I'd be happy to answer your questions about the program since, as Wendy said, it is the same program just with the BSN endpoint. I am fourth semester - currently doing peds and OB.

Hello Julie! I was browsing on the Sac State website and read that Sac State has gotten rid of the ELM program and instead offers only an acc BSN program. Is this true? I wonder... what happened?

Also, how is your experience there? How do you like the program? Are you feeling that you are learning much from instructors? What is the student to teacher ratio? I feel like I learn much better in a small class size. Is it competitive? Do you have a life outside of the program? hahaha...only kidding. Well, I hope your peds and OB clincals are going well. I just started the regular nursing semester at Sac State. I hear from others that have friends in the ELM program that they had a high rate of people not passing their classes.

ELM people started with by taking 16 units over the summer 7 classes total, this included clinicals. Burn out rate has got to be alot.

I hear the program was poorly organized and that many of the students were not going to complete the Master part of the program, thus droping out after they recieved their B.S.N.

That may be why they are cancling the program and changing into a accelerated B.S.N. program instead.

Hi Amy, Yes, it is true. The ELM program is no more and now they will start an accelerated BSN program this summer. I heard that it is the same program but when the BSN is awarded there will not be an automatic bridge to the MSN. People interested in a masters will have to apply separately. I think it had to do with what the hospitals need right now (bedside nurses). The problem with that thinking is that one of the real issues around the nursing shortage is lack of teachers. Teachers need a masters, which is why the colleges like the MSN and they really encourage students to think about teaching.

I like the program - it is definitely full time and then some. I am learning a lot. I dont think you ever feel confident until about a year after starting your first job. (This is what I hear anyway.) Each instructor has his/her own style (especially in clinicals). I dont have too much of a life out of school. I have two kids and between them and school my plate is full. The good news is that with the accelerated program you are done in 14 months!! We go straight through including summers. It is a crazy schedule but getting an RN in a year (after pre-reqs of course) is worth it to me.

I think the ELM started with 60. After the summer one had dropped because of getting into a different program and two had not passed a class. After the fall we lost three more due to not passing. From what I have read on this site that doesn't seem too bad but I dont know what the stats are for the regular BSN program or other ELM programs. And most of the people we have "lost" are continuing on in nursing - just a semester behind.

I dont think the program is poorly organized - we all went into it knowing that being awarded a BSN in 14 months was going to mean a heavy workload. I think the problem is that Sac State has doubled the number of nursing students - that along with trying to share available clinical experiences with the community colleges and Samuel Merritt - scheduling is a nightmare.

As for people not continuing on to the masters...I guess that may be a reason why they would drop the program but we havent actually gotten to that point so its a little premature to be making a decision based on hearsay.
