accidental fingerstick

Published

I am so worried.

I was giving an injection to my patient when I accidentaly struck myself with the needle after injecting the patient.

He has MRSA (which after reading about it, says its everywhere skin, blood)

I made an incident report but I am so worried I will get sepsis.

He also has cancer, pneumonia. Im worried about the mrsa. Should my employer offer me something?

sorry meant to say needlestick not fingerstick

A pharmacist is also always a great resource. According to the terms of service (TOS) no medical or legal advice to be given. Consult your MD or pharmacist. Best wishes to you in your future.

Hello. Though we nurses do compare notes about personal prescriptions and blood tests , it may be helpful for you to ask your specific questions regarding "doctor did not order any lab work" and " concern about drug test for job" to a second patient care provider for a second opinion. In that manner, hopefully you can "cut to the chase" and clear up answers you are seeking about protection of your health and prep for application for your new job. Best wishes!

I don't consider myself an expert on infectious disease transmission.....But I have read the statistics on needlesticks (Specifically HIV related) If I remember correctly, isn't there a 0.3-0.45% chance of contracting HIV with a needlestick?.... If you feel the need to argue with me and belittle my education, please provide some evidence based explanations other than your "prion" lodging theory.

Thank you for providing your statistics. However, my point remains that a stick is a stick is a stick. Whether it's a 50% chance of transmission or a .000000001% chance of transmission, it is unhelpful to tell a needlestick victim "I would not worry about it too much." That is dangerous advice because it could lead to a false assumption of nonrisk and a failure to take precautionary actions.

And I will admit to a "fast typing" mistake that I did not catch. I did not mean to type "HIV prion." I mean to say HIV or prion. We are all so focused on HIV contagion that we sometimes forget that there are other bloodborne risks (some smaller than a virus) that can be transmitted by any gauge of needle.

Of course OP should be concerned and she should take action.

Yes it sounds like you left your docs office with a lot of questions. I would say to call and talk to your docs nurse and convey the questions and concerns you have and your doc should get back to you. Good luck....and cograts on the new job!
