Congrats! I graduate from there in May and think it is the best thing I have EVER done for myself! I too am a single mom of three and will be 39 when I graduate.
I wish you all the best and if you have any questions, feel free to ask away!
kukukajoo,
I am curious. What is a typical day like for a nursing student (including study time)? I know nursing school is probably something I couldn't understand until I experienced it myself, but just curious, how much does a nursing student have to study? I am nervous...I have 2 youngsters and I want to get my nursing degree, but with me having no family or any good friends out here (we moved here about a year ago), my only source of reliable child care would be whatever daycare they will go to and my hubby...and with my hubby schedule, there are times he might not be home until late. Did you have evening clinicals, and if so, how often?
Thanks!!

congratulations!
First year was a little hard. I was sleep deprived but just pushed myself to continue and ALL of my class made it through the first year!!
Class & Clinical for first year is 4 days a week first year, 3 days as a senior (mon & Tues clinical and weds lecture usually getting out at noon).
I learned to study in small spurts whenever I could find a few minutes and should have bought stock in index cards as I have TONS I made up to whip out when I could. I would stay up late and sometimes get up early to study as well. I think it depends on the person how much time you need to study as some didn't study much and still made it. Paying attention and taking good notes would be the most important thing.
I take my books to doc appts, etc to study for the few min until we are called, etc.
I don't have much support either or a husband so you will be ahead of the game there. Having no friends may be a bonus of sorts as it will be hard to stay in touch anyhow. You will make lasting connections in school anyhow.
I cant remember which days were class or clinical for first year but expect 4 days a week. Clinical is from 0630 until bout 3 or 3:30 and at local places. LRGH, FRH, Taylor Home and St Francis Home.
Before a test I always cram but I also study all the time. I try to always read ahead so the lecture makes more sense and I can ask questions about things I did not understand in the reading.
Sandra Lee has some good cookbooks to make quick and easy meals. My home is a wreck now but I can live with it, it is just a bit longer now. I am however looking forward to cleaning it from top to bottom this coming week as it is our spring break. I can't believe I am actually looking forward to cleaning, lol- never ever thought that day would come!!!!
Thank you so much for the information. I am one of those people who can study, but if it isn't the "right" time, I retain very little. I usually study at night and sleep right after...I heard that helps people retain like 80% (not sure if that number is right) more info. I did it in the Navy when I was studying electronics (not my cup of tea), and it helped.
I hear you on the cleaning part. When I was in school taking 3 science courses, I didn't touch my house at all....besides the dishes and laundry. So, at the end of every semester I would do a deep clean. LOL
Did you have any prior medical experience?? I have none...just what a mom gets from taking her kid to the doc's. :)
Oh it DOES work to study just before sleep!
There is an NCLEX review course called NCLEX Excel thru Drexel. They have the audio CDs, study book and all kinds of test qs for $200. I play those suckers on repeat all nite long! The two times I didnt I
bombed the tests.
Nope- no medical exp here at all, just same as you and those TV shows! Hasn't hurt me at all. I was feeling a bit lacking in skills during the fundmentals as the LNAs knew the vitals, etc and kind of were basking in their glory. BUT it was short lived and it may have helped them have a slight edge early on, we were all on level playing ground very soon and they were not so smug then!

Congrats!!!!
Thank you! The deadline was February 1. It was way earlier than I expected to hear. Good luck!
You are funny! But thanks for the confidence boost...I was actually worried about not having any medical experience. The people I know that have finished nursing school all were LPN's or corpsman in the Navy before.
I am going to have to get that NCLEX thing you were talking about. So, it helps for nursing school and for taking the NCLEX later on?
Do you already have a job lined up?
