Hello ladies and gents,
Yesterday I found out that I have been accepted into the Fall 2008 ADN program at SPSCC in Olympia! :w00t:I'd been anxiously awaiting a response from the school since I recently turned down the ELMSN and MEPN programs at PLU and UW. Needless to say, I am thrilled to know that I WILL be starting a program in the fall. Are there any other folks out there who've been accepted to SPSCC? I just wanted to extend my feelers and become acquainted since we'll be spending the next 2 years together.

Congrats! I have heard that they are strictly GPA based, so HORRAY!
Were you accepted to both PLU and UW, but decided not to take that route?
Yes, I was accepted to both schools and initially I was planning on going the direct-entry MSN route. But after much thought and consideration, I decided that the ADN would be a much better option for me at this time. If I choose to receive my MSN afterwards, I can take a few bridge courses in lieu of earning an actual BSN (since I already have a non-nursing bachelor's degree) and begin working towards a specialty. I wanted to give myself time to decide on a specialty and feel that this way I may actually have more options as far as specialties are concerned. SPSCC has a great reputation in the area and our local hospital eagerly hires it's graduates. Plus, it's a much more affordable option that is literally around the corner from my home. The past year has been crazy with all of the college applications and completion of prerequisites- I'm just so excited to actually begin a program at long last!

I am graduating from SPSCC in June with my RN. I attended Centralia college for my LPN. Good Luck!!
Hi Nurselacey,
Congrats on next month's graduation! What did you think about SPSCC's program? Were the clinicals adequate? Any tips for a newbie? Thanks!
Hi Olynp2b,
Have you attended SPSCC before? Are you an LPN starting the second year or beginning your first year? It is difficult for those students that have not worked as a nurse prior to entering the second year. If you are a first year student I would recommend working as an LPN during the summer or on call..It will help you a lot.
I've taken all of my prereqs at SPSCC and will be attending the first year of the program. I just finished my CNA class so I'm going to try to work at least part time as an aide until school starts in September. I'll definitely look at working as an LPN after the first year so that I can gain more experience. Thanks!
OlyNP2b,
Great Idea!! I was a CNA for a few years and then a Lab Technologist and a LPN for two years. It really helped me get through the program. It's not easy, just take it a day at a time and study, study, study!!!:typing:yawn:

I am looking to transfer to spscc for the second year ADN bridge program, right now I am taking my lpn elsewhere and bridging. I see you state that it is easier, if you work as a Lpn prior to going in the program? Why? IHow much clinical time is given at spscc in the first year LPN?

There is a small chance I may be applying to this program within the next few years if I decide to relocate. I will be coming from CA, and will likely do most of my prereq's here. Is the program really GPA based? What are the acceptance rates? Also, what other RN programs and colleges could I consider that are relatively close to Olympia? Thank you so much, and congratulations!!

On SPSCC's website they have an info packet that lists how they create a ranking list by a computed score, and then you can then call the advisor to see what the cutoff score was previously so you can see if you are competitive. It's a nice campus - good school adjacent to olympia / tumwater. The acceptance rates will vary on how many apply... the positive thing is since its objective you can tell in advance where you are within the rankings. SPSCC has a good reputation and overall would be a nice school to be at.
I understand CA does a lot of wait listing within the state for nursing chools For the seattle/tacoma area and WA it seems most use objective data ie past academic, pre-reqs in order to rank students admit on a bi-annual or annual basis... most programs will state what the criteria is and what the previous cutoff was so you can pretty much know your competitiveness in advance of applying... if you are moving to this area you could take a look at a couple of schools based on where you want to live and based on your pre-reqs and their requirements... also as a side note SPSCC, among several others, requires a CNA license - not prior to admission but prior to starting the program... The exceptions to ranking for admission locally are clover park, they do a wait list, and tacoma cc, they do a lottery for students who meet a certain gpa threshold. Good luck on your move~
