Hey everyone I received my acceptance letter yesterday for Farmingdales Nursing Program for the Fall 2009 semester :). I created this thread for other people who are accepted to also post so we can get to know each other before starting in August!!! I am really excited and can't wait for the orientation on April 17th... hope to talk to you all soon and best of luck to everyone else!!!
Thank you neeniebean for the advice and everything. After I found out when the mass and burial was (we are not having a wake so it is all happening on one day, at one time) I immediately sent an email to the department that Saturday. I then got a response from a woman who is a secretary there who has helped me out throughout my whole application process. I also emailed the department chair she told me I'd have to come in later (but didn't give me a date).
Today I decided to go to Farmingdale to show how serious I am and that I am really facing a difficult situation. Again the secretary was nothing but helpful, she said she would ask the chair if she would see me.
The chair would not even come out and meet me or shake my hand and apologize that I am not allow to register early, she just sent the secretary out and said "no, you absolutely cannot register early." It took so much strength in me not to breakdown and cry. I am not trying to get a better schedule than everyone else, I am not trying to avoid the $75 check (because I brought that with me anyway) or try and get out of going to the orientation because I was SO excited about going.
So I asked the secretary, if I cannot register Friday can I come in on Saturday or Monday and meet with an adviser to register, all they said was I don't know, I don't know. I am so hurt and upset, for a field that a) knows that deaths are not convenient and aren't in your schedule and b) your main quality should be compassion... I didn't see any of that.
My last attempt will be skipping the lunch after the mass and burial on Friday, and trying to show up for the orientation late. If that is not acceptable I really don't even know what to do or even think of Farmingdale anymore.
Hi,
I just registered here to to tell you not to give up on your dream just because the administration at Farmingdale sucks! I just got accepted to the program too, but I've been at Farmingdale for 4 years doing my BS. Let me tell you- the Professors are great (most of them at least), the admistration- oh my God!!!! You cannot get a straight answer to anything and can never get an answer over the phone. From what I hear most SUNY schools are like that! Maybe they are underpaid?
Whoe cares! You want to be a nurse, you will be a nurse w/o tons of loans! Just never taks no for an answer, keep asking other students about everything- you will find out much more this way.
I'm sorry for your loss- go take care of the funeral and don't worry! The first part is all boring general crap anyway-the nursing part is more important b/c you need to register. The worst case- you won't get your first preference in clinical site- they have to have enough spots for all students they have accepted!
Good luck
Thanks for taking the time to respond. It was just so hurtful it felt like they didn't believe me or that I was lying or something. I think that is what upset me the most. I ended up showing up, sending a bunch more emails and finally got an appointment to come in Monday at 10:30am to make my schedule. I didn't think it was right to have to leave the funeral early, and if I were to do that I would have had to drive separately outside the limo my family was taking. I am so incredibly dedicated to this and just getting in I was soooo excited, I never saw any of this coming. But congratulations to you too kinisa. Let me know which hospitals you get and maybe all you lucky guys able to go Friday can write up a summary post for me :)
Try not to take it personally. Like i said in another post- you'll find out REAL quickl that you need to advocate for yourself in that program, and really make yourself heard in order to get what you need. It sucks, but thats just the way it is. I doubt that its just Farmingdale, but still, it was extremely frustrating at times. Don't let it get you down though. It's a tough field- better to thicken your skin now. But, don't let their dismissiveness effect your goals, and don't take it to heart. That's just the way some in that dept can be.
orientation @ Farmingdale
Part 1 College Student Orientation from Dean of Students Office.
About 35 people. We just reviewed the student handbook and student services. If you are a transfer student, nothing you don't already know.
Part 2 Nursing Student Orientation
We were introduced to some of the nursing department faculty. They gave us the book list for NUR108. Be prepared to go broke, lots of $$$ for required extras outside of tuition (fees, parking, gas, and materials). Also for uniforms, we are allowed to wear plain white leather sneakers. We got the list of hospitals and class times. They registered us at 12:30. Done by 1pm. You will have a slot program but you may have to be flexible on the class times. It appeared folks were partial to day sections.
Hey Teach! Are u a teacher changing careers as well? Oldcat, Ill bring my folder to CPR tomorrow to show u the book list and stuff. 5 books for 108 whoa!!! I priced them at the bookstore b4 I left. If they are all new, it comes to about under $400 (new). The associate at the desk didnt have any used yet so he couldnt give me a price for them yet. Im assuming it would be around $300 for used ones. NUR 100 didnt have a book list yet. He thinks its just a lab book.
Thanks guys for filling me in!! Okay so I am missing some paper work with the lists of 2384234 expensive books haha. My mom is a seamstress on the side I wonder if she can measure me, I remember the website describing how to measure. Hopefully when I come in on Monday they will be able to give me some of the information. I hate feeling out of the loop Thanks so much everyone for filling me in!!!! Enjoy this BEAUTIFUL weekend.
Thats so funny! Ive heard a lot of Nurses becoming teachers too. I guess both careers similar in stress, and paperwork (dealing with people too). I have to say, becoming a teacher taught me how to learn, if you can understand that. Ive become an exceptional student by learning the "other side" of the equation.

I'm so sorry for your loss =(
You could call the Nursing dept and ask them when the other orientation dates are and then see if you could change it. I don't know that they'd have a problem with it, but it will be a disadvantage to you because many clinical spots will fill up quickly- Lecture & lab spots too, but clinicals are the ones that are much more limited. Maybe you could let them know the situation and ask them if you could come out and meet with an advisor and make up your schedule now, but then go to one of the later orientations to experience the rest of the information presentation stuff? It's worth a shot. The orientation itself only takes a couple of hours (unless they changed it), but i'm assuming it would probably be the same hours as the funeral. Call them- see what your options are! Good luck, and i'm sorry, again.
