that's fantastic! Before I began nursing school, I went through the first year of a 3-year professional midwifery program (the first year focused on holistic labor support, the second on preparing for the 3rd year midwifery apprenticeship). I learned a lot from the CPMs (Certified Professional Midwives, which is the title for licensed midwives in most states) and value the education I received from them. I learned so much about the emotional and pyschological aspects of birth, concepts which have shaped the way I practise as nurse.
The most important thing I learned though, was that the woman who devote their lives to the right for women to have safe, professionally attended homebirths aren't "lay" anything- they're licensed professionals just like us :)

I am a student working towards BSN and then a MSN in Midwifery...Today I left Sociology early and had lunch with a CNM, toured her practice, and then the hospital she works at. She was so wonderfully encouraging. She encouraged me to call a lay midwife and apprentice with one, just to get my feet wet...while I'm working towards my CNM.
I did and I start my apprenticeship NEXT FRIDAY! I am soooooo excited!!!!
