ABSN Duke Fall 2010

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

Hoping the few people I spoke with today at the interviews who had flights in a northeasterly direction got out of town ok! I think the girl on the way to Philly is probably holed up here waiting it out (and hoping she gets back in time for a mandatory micro lab on Monday!)

I think I did pretty well interview-wise. Drew an ace with my first interviewer, a man who has frequented the restaurant I ran... I am definitely more worried about the financial situation, though, as I am every time that nice woman from the financial aid office gets up to speak. I am choosing the path of blissful crossing-of-that-bridge-when-I-trip-over-it. And I'm sure as hell going to be networking my a** off in the ICU while volunteering there. Here's to being personally invested in the economy's improvement!

Yours, as always, in nail-biting anticipation,

J.

I call unfair advantage! :p

any one else interested in L&D?

I've thought about doing L&D for a couple of years before going back to grad school. Eventually I would like to work as an FNP focusing on women's health...probably in a public health setting. Granted I'm pretty open to anything at this point. So many different areas interest me. Women's health has just always been my main interest especially after volunteering with Planned Parenthood. Of course, having spent the last two years in veterinary ophthalmology, I've become fascinated with the field. Who knows, maybe I would enjoy human eyes, as well. :D

I'm really looking forward to the women's health clinical because I'm interested in L&D but, I have no idea whether I'd actually enjoy it or not. Having never seen or experienced childbirth, it's hard to know what to expect.

Some of the nurses where I volunteer were talking about working L&D. They said that in some hospitals, the same set of nurses is responsible for both the labor and the baby while in other hospitals, a pediatric nurse takes over as soon as the baby is born so the L&D nurses are really just focused on the birthing part. They all had really strong preferences about which set-up they liked better.

I'm happy that most programs start with psychiatric nursing first because that's the area that I'm least interested in. It seems like most programs are structured so that you do pediatrics and women's health towards the end of the program. Those are the areas that most appeal to me and I'm glad that I won't have to tackle them until later because hopefully by then I'll feel more comfortable in a clinical setting and be more ready to enjoy the learning experience... rather than just trying to figure out what the heck I'm supposed to be doing all of the time.

Yeah, I won't rule out an interest in L&D, but I've been present for a birth (albeit a home birth) and while it was amazing and fascinating and wonderful and happy, I can't see myself wanting to do that all day, every day! Especially since I have my own fairly strong beliefs (hey, who's surprised there?) about birth and women's role in it and it conflicts a bit with the medical establishment's love of constant birth intervention... I think I'd be a better midwife than L&D nurse. :D But when it comes times to do L&D clinicals, like anything else, I'll give it my all and approach it with as open a mind as I can manage! I have a lot of interest in women's health in general and women's health education... I wish a lot of women (especially those who can't pay hundreds for childbirth classes) had access to more birth education and were encouraged to take a more active role in their childbirth process.

Psych... definitely little interest. I asked my boy (doing his internship in an inpatient psych hospital) what the psych nurses do and all I got for an answer was "Um... stuff? I know they spend a lot of time cleaning up the kid who won't control his bowels..." :uhoh3: Let's hope our clinical placement offers more excitement than psych ward poo patrol...

Did any one in this forum join FB DUKE 2011 thread?????

I bet that's a group for the people that started in January 2010.

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! Just had to vent. We will find out soon enough right?

Anyone else having major trouble getting Financial Aid to call you back? The main rep was not in today but last week didn't get back to me. I'm sure they are slammed... but I just want to make sure my stuff was received... Guess I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm losing it too, trust me. For every reason I find for myself that they should accept me, I have this voice in the back of my head wondering if it's not the 106th best reason presented to the committee this Friday. Argh!

Do they really make all of their decisions in just one day? It seems crazy to me that they can reach a verdict on so many applications in one fell swoop.

I dont think they will make all decisions on one day. I strongly feel that decision might have already been made for 60% of the class and for the remaining 40% they might come to a conclusion on friday.
