ABSN Duke Fall 2010

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

you are totally right. my mom (in her typical mom fashion) was scribbling the numbers wrong and freaking me out about the whole situation. somehow she got in her mind that there was a general cap on undergrad loans... but I feel like a total rock- as clearly that is not true. Thanks for the clarification. Really sorry about your pup... I know that has to be incredibly difficult. Mine may only be 11 pounds, but she is dog enough for 3 people. The idea of living together appeals to me. It would certainly be well documented. CHEESE!

Specializes in Neuro ICU.

Okay, good. I thought maybe I had it totally wrong for a second and would have to find some way to make up the financial gap myself - ha! That's definitely not going to happen.

And thanks re: the pup. He was diagnosed back in November or so, so I've had time to start coming to terms with what's going to soon happen. Doesn't make it easier but we're enjoying our time left with him. And, honestly, I'm glad it happened now rather than 6 months later... trying to move halfway up the east coast with a dying dog doesn't sound like my idea of fun.

Anyways, if you come across any nice-looking hippie commune houses in your searching, let us know. ;)

I asked our favorite person and she said that the committee is meeting on Feb 12th so we probably won't here anything until the week after. ugh!!!

I know this is not what everyone was wanting to hear but atleast you know not to be panicking next week when you haven't received anything yet.

Geneva - NO WAY! We are absolutely NOT turning it into a reality show! Hahaha!

Twois, I am so sorry to hear about your sick pup. My heart breaks for you...

Tazluff - Thanks for telling us what you learned. That's a bummer. :(

During my interview today, **** mentioned that they would meet next Friday and probably make decisions by the middle of the week after that. Sorry for all those who are so anxious.

I really enjoyed the day today, except for the financial aid part when I started thinking about how much this could cost me. 80K is a lot of money. But I know it is an investment, and I could earn some back when I stay at Duke....but still.

I'm concerned about the getting-a-job-at-Duke part. The girl who toured us around the hospital told us that not everyone gets hired, and - get this - they only let you interview for one position! How crazy is that? And there was only one ICU job open this time around. That scares me a bit, because unless nursing school dramatically changes my mind, that's where I want to be...

Wait, really? They only let you interview for one position? I never heard that!

How did your interview go, Aimzly?

Specializes in Neuro ICU.

Yeah, I never heard that through the "official" channels myself, but she just graduated and started at the pediatric cardiac ICU at Duke's hospital, so... it's at least a source close to the process, I suppose. Definitely a little nerve-wracking if you have a specific interest, having to put all your eggs in one basket!

I thought the interview went well. But it is hard to tell because the questions were all so broad. I guess its just a matter of whether what I said is what they are looking for. If it's meant to be its meant to be.

I did get the idea that jobs right now are harder to get, but during one of my interview sessions I asked about that, and the faculty seemed to think that in a year or so the economy should help stabilize job openings. They have had a lot of part-time nurses start to work full time, people holding off retirement, and coming back from not working. That has put a pinch on jobs, but they think that should stabilize and there will be more opportunities by the time we get close to looking for jobs. She also said that those students that were really good on their clinicals and good at interviews had jobs, it was more of those who were not the best at all of their skills and didn't interview well that were struggling to get jobs. The faculty seemed to indicate that I shouldn't worry too much about that.

Glad to hear it well, Amy!
