Hi All!
I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??
Is it 77 or just plain 70?
I'm not sure actually. For some reason I typed 77 because I thought that was the number being thrown around, but it may be 70. Either way, a lot of the people who got an interview will receive an offer for admission.
I know this sounds dramatic but, I don't know if I could stomach the agony of the wait list.
I know, right? I think as long as you're pretty high on the waitlist it's pretty much like an offer letter though. It seems there are a lot of very intelligent people who apply to both UNC and Duke who go to UNC for the cost. Since I am out of state, I am indifferent about the cost and prefer Duke.
Does anyone know what the criteria was for an automatic interview being granted?
Long ago "the nice lady" told me that the average GRE for accepted students was between 1150-1200. I would imagine the mark for automatic interview might be around 1100??? Just a guess.
Thanks!
Do you have any idea if GPA played a factor in automatic interviews and/or what the approximate GPA is of accepted students?
mld~
I don't have anything about GPA. I do have the source of the "77". This is a copy and paste from an email with the nice lady back in the spring...I think I may have shared with with the group at some point.
We typically receive around 200 and we currently have 77 slots for admission. We are going to likely decrease to 56 slots in the spring. The fall classes are larger.
I think that a while ago someone (kebunt?) posted on this thread that the GPA for an automatic interview was 3.2.
Okay - 77 it is then! That's great!
I'm scheduled to fly out tonight but it is raining buckets here on the west coast. I'm contemplating changing into my gym pants because my work pants are completely soaked through! I have a feeling my flight will be delayed.

I believe it's gpa and test scores used to determine automatic interviews. Also, I was told awhile back that the average gpa of admitted students was 3.4. Maybe it was 3.6? Now I can't remember but I do recall being surprised that it wasn't higher...
Thank you all for the encouragement. You know how once you distance yourself and take a moment to look back, it's not really as bad as you thought? Well, that's not happening here. I am spending the day shopping to make myself feel better. Now even if I do get in, I won't be able to afford it!

kebunt-
Do you have all of your prereqs done? I've been bored out of my mind the last week and have been cruising posts on the website. I've come to the conclusion that one of the major factors that no one is talking about for reasons of people not getting in is whether they have all their prereqs completed or not.
I'm sure you're not one of the first people to be nervous in an interview. Perhaps the 2nd half of your interview will be the part that sticks in their mind. You were one of the first to be interviewed which is a difficult situation to be in. I commend you for that.
I think I remember hearing that the average GPA of admitted students was a 3.4. I, too, was surprised that it wasn't higher. I wonder if they recalculate your GPA just for your prereqs or if they only look at the whole number.
Kebunt - That sounds like my plan! I told myself that if I didn't get into nursing school this year, I'd blow some money on 10 days in Mexico.
Great news my fellow hopefuls! Talked to *the dear one* this afternoon and she told me I am considered for the interview! As it stands, she said that they decided "late in the game" that the GRE will be thrown out for next go round and it can be waived if you like for this one. They couldn't update the website soon enough or be in touch with everyone so this is what it is: if your GPA is 3.25 or higher you will be considered. If you wish, you can ask for the GRE score to NOT be reviewed when the panel actually looks at you. I opted for this so she said she marked my GRE as "waived". She said a lot of people were doing this, many of the ones who found out at the last minute it was not required.
Quoting myself here in regard to info I got from the nice lady back in Dec about automatic interview criteria. From what she said it was SOLELY based on GPA.
Interviews: Yes they have an "automatic interview" benchmark if your GPA (not sure if it's prereq or undergrad) and GRE meet or exceed, you are automatically moved to interview status. I think those have been processed b/c she said that mine has been classified within that (YAY!). I have not officially been notified, so don't freak. She said that "maybe later this week" or "very soon" I will be notified by email and then a follow up phone call to schedule the interview.
Thanks Rubypie! I never had a conversation with her, I just got the idea it was gpa and gre from the above Carolina11 quote. I know I know. Blame the one so immersed in school right now she's not even around to defend herself! We miss you Carolina!!
mld1980 - Thanks for the thought. I hope that's the part that sticks with them as well:) I guess I'll find out 4-6 weeks from now like everybody else! When do you interview? This Friday? I can't remember... To answer your question, I have completed all the prereqs as well as Developmental Psych. I am registered for an nutrition course which is not optional to the other school that has already accepted me. I am curious...why do you think whether or not all prereqs are completed is a big factor? Please do share your theory!
Abbie Grace - Have a good flight! I don't know if you'll be in touch while you're in NC, so just in case...Good luck on Friday, Girl! :redbeathe

Thank you so much for the info, I'm sure you did great, we are our own worst critic! Great to know they DO read the statement. Glad I didn't slave over that thing for nothing.
