ABSN Duke Fall 2010

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

Twois...I hate to be the one to break it to you but mental health, in NC particularly, has not been recession proof. I have had my Masters in Social work for the last 5 years and been clinical licensed for the past 3. In that time, I have seen one agency I worked for close the doors over night and the other I took a 13,000 dollar pay cut in one day. I was also made to go to "part time" status as the companies refused to pay for our insurance. The State seems to hate mental health and jobs, benefits/jobs are being cut everyday. I am currently a supervisor in a Mental Health Agency and we are hiring Masters Level people to do Case Management. My advice to him is to start sending resume's to Psychiatrist or try to get in at a hospital for some security. I PRAY his experience is different then mine or the job market is better in R/D then here in Asheville.

I will more than likely be moving without my boyfriend. We have been together close to two years but he is working on somethings that will keep in in Asheville. So unless this all falls through (which would be horrible) I'll be facing the Durham move with out him. :crying2:

Bummer. He needs to do his two years of supervised work to get licensure, so he knows he's already going to be a bit limited, but we're hoping he can find something that doesn't, uh, suck... whether we stay here for me to go to UF, or go up to Duke. He's done both his practicum and his internship at the inpatient child/adolescent unit at Shands (our big university hospital system) here and will have fantastic references, but that won't matter if there's no jobs in the first place. I know he really wants to keep working with the kids/teens and really enjoys the acute clinical setting, but is willing to work in a different arena if that's where the work is.

If I get in to Duke, then I'm going to push him to establish contact with everyone he can, even if it's a few months too early to search... I've been unemployed here since June, so I know how stressful the job hunt is. :(

(Also, still no email!)

No email for me either...Also Twois, I can help him with supervision. I am supervising a few LCPS/LCSWs now...I know if you have to get "outside" supervision it can get quite costly! I'd be happy to do it just to keep my mental health skills sharp!

I'm in Minnesota right now and debating between flying out for the interview and a phone interview. A phone interview would be more cost effective, and I know it's not supposed to sway the admissions committee either way, but I can't help thinking I should just bite the bullet and fly out. What do you guys think?

Oh, cool! I will definitely have to keep in touch with you! You mental health people and your acronyms... hahaha. (Like medicine/nursing is any better!) I have no idea what letters describe him. He's getting an M.Ed and a Ed.S... I'm pretty sure that's right...? I try so hard to keep up with what he does but it's a big mess of acronyms and vague details due to HIPAA!

What kind of deals can you get on airfare for those dates? Worst case, you could fly in and out same day and not have overnight expenses.

Estimated cost of attendance for ABSN program at Duke University: $84,000

Flight from MN - NC: $300, give or take a few bucks

Drop in the bucket, baby! Come to Duke Days!

(I realize that's not a realistic way of looking at it, but I'm an enabler... c'moooooooon. ;))

mld:

Have you already been to NC or Duke's campus? If not- that may be an important thing to do before (hopefully) commiting. (You could always multi-task & use the weekend to apartment hunt as well.)

Also- do you have any items in your application that might be weak or questionable? If so... you may want to go the distance in hopes that the effort and f2f time will bend the arch in your favor.

The other thing to consider is the "what if" factor. If you are someone that is greatly impacted by "woulda shouldas" it may be in your best psychological interest to fly down.

I think I'm gonna do it...

GOT THE EMAIL!

I got an email too!

OK I think I'm going to check airfare dates and fly out. I think I can get a good deal on airfare with Southwest. What airport do I fly into? Raleigh? I've only been to NC once!
