Hi all,I'm going to be taking A&P soon.I really want to know what the class is like.I heard you have to read several chapters of your book in x amount of days and know the stuff.That's crazy......essay questions scare me too.Will I be seeing alot of those?

Don't be scared. Get the textbook and start reading. There is alot of information to learn and A & P is only the beginning. A tip, try to get the textbook new, it will usually come with a CD containing tutorials you can view on the computer. It is a great resource. I'm approaching graduation in a few weeks, trust me time flies.

Bella is dead on. The CD that came with my book was huge. AP1 or AP2? 1 is almost all memorization. Not a ton of processes. You will learn the bones, muscles, nerves, veins and atreries, and abbreviations. ALOT to memorize.

FLASH cards....big time.

Specializes in cardiac, ortho, med surg, oncology.

The anatomy part is easy if you can memorize things easily. Physiology on the other hand can be intense. It is the foundation of your nursing knowledge so it is important to thoroughly understand the concepts. Good luck!!

If the new book also comes with online access to the publishers' website, be sure and check that out. My book did and the website has some pretty good online tests to help with the memorization.

She's right.

This class is a lot of memorization. You have to memorize names of the bones, muscles, veins and arteries, organs, skin, then you'll have to memorize the systems and how they work. How they work down to the cellular level. So, it is not fun. But, you will need to know all of this stuff if you want to be a nurse.

[color=#1822cd] *study pictures and/or drawings and figure out what the picture is trying to show you.

[color=#1822cd] *study with someone else, thereby forcing yourself to talk about the info. you will find that your own ego will make you get the information down correct when you talk about it.

[color=#1822cd] *recopy your notes (preferably prior to the next class)...recopying them gets them into your brain better than simply reading them.

[color=#1822cd]

[color=#1822cd] *rearrange your notes. for example: flash cards, or create sheets with columns labeled what-where-how-why- etc. the act of creating these study resources will help almost as much as ever using them.

[color=#1822cd] *read the summaries at each chapter's end, or the related chapter in your lab book, or heck try reading the textbook. there is a study guide you can buy or there are two on reserve in the library....working these exercises helps.

[color=#1822cd] *try reading your notes into a tape recorder and then listening while you drive, or do laundry or jog.

[color=#1822cd] *play--surf--the web

[color=#1822cd]

[color=#1822cd] *most of all --- just do it, there are no short cuts, there is no silver platter(s).

my a&p exams were multiple choice. there were one or two written assignments but those were for extra points. i would have been happy for essay style exams - there are a lot of ways to get tripped up in multiple choice exams. especially when they up the ante and you have to pick the "best answer" rather than the "right answer". but this is something you'll have to get used to in order to pass the nclex.

are you taking an accelerated course? i did the full 16 week semester courses - exams covered two chapters - one exam about every two weeks - 7 exams total.

I agree with the above. Get the book now and just start to read over some things or at least try to start memorizing the bones and muscles. Flash cards helped me as did the A&P coloring book. Our teacher made us trace pictures of bones, mucles, nerves, etc and label them as part of our requirement for lab. That also helped. My questions were multiple choice. The CD with the book was great. Mine had practice tests and print out flash cards.

Hi all,I'm going to be taking A&P soon.I really want to know what the class is like.

Well, it's a class, and it's about the anatomy and physiology of the human body.

Sorry, couldn't help it! :D

If your the type who doesn't like to study and wants things easy, you'll be in trouble. Otherwise, you should get a book and get started learning the muscles and bones.

Agreed with most of the postings here. I found for A&P 1 that the coloring book was really helpful! It's kind of fun to sit there and color the bones and the whole time you say the name of the bone (or part of the bone!) in your head while you color.

I would really focus on the physiology part. I'm going through A&P 2 right now and the physiology gets complicated.. But it's also a HUGE part of nursing. (Let's talk lab values!)

Good luck!!
