AACC Spring 2012 hopefuls?

Published

Hello fellow MD nurses!

I'm just looking to see if there are any prospective Spring 2012 students at AACC? I'm finishing up A&P2 this summer and will be putting my application in in the fall. Anyone take the TEAS yet? Any advice? I'll probably take mine in August when I'm done with classes so I can focus on studying for that as opposed to my other classes.

Do any of you know whether we have to or should get a flu shot? I'm going to the doctor tomorrow to do my health examination record, and if I have to get it I might as well get it while I'm there.

I'm not sure if it's required, but from what I understand- clinical sites might ask that we have the shot or sign a waiver (a friend of mine was a PT student at UMB a few years ago when the H1N1 breakout happened and there was a whole hullabaloo about immunizations and if it's ethical to force us to get immunizations and what not).

I'd say if you have nothing against immunizations, just go ahead and get it...

Probably wouldn't hurt. Call SPH or Gwen? Or just go for it. Good forethought!

Congratulations again to all! I am so excited!

Had a question for anyone who may know the answer: If we do not get into hybrid option (which I opted into if available) what would the class schedule be like? I know that clinicals/labs will be weekend probably, but I am trying to get an idea of what day or time of day classes may be. I have a 4 yr old son and 15 month old daughter, so I am trying to be ready to find childcare if necessary! I don't know anyone in the nursing program currently.

Can't wait to meet everyone!

I'm in the face-to-face group so I can answer your schedule questions. In the first 9 weeks, you will generally have lectures starting no earlier than 8am, and you will be done no later than 4pm on Mon, Tues, and Wed. There is quite a bit of variability within that window from day to day though. For example, yesterday I had an exam from 8-8:45, a lecture from 9-12, and another lecture from 1-4; today on the other hand, I had a lecture from 11:30 to 1, and that was it. You will have most Thursdays off until clinicals start, and Fridays are usually off unless you choose to go to optional open lab, (which I highly recommend). Once you start clinicals in week 10, you will have lectures on Mondays, clinical assignment time on Tuesdays, and clinicals on Wednesdays and Thursdays- usually from 7:30 until 2:30-3:30.

Take that with a grain of salt though, I don't know that your first semester will be set-up exactly the same as ours.

Hope that helps!

All of the clinical sites required students to get flu shots this semester, can't say for sure if they'll require it of your class though, since you'll be starting clinicals at the tail end of flu season.:)

I ended up not getting it today because blood work, the ppd skin test and the tetorifice shot was enough needles for one day.

But I'll definitely get it later if necessary, thanks for the info!

Has anyone started buying anything yet? So excited for orientation!!

I haven't bought anything yet, but I've started making what I presume to be a pretty lengthy school related Christmas list. haha. I'm definitely excited for orientation! I can't wait to meet all of you!

Glad to see I'm not the only one asking Santa for a stethoscope and some scrubs! I've informed my hubby that I'd like a nice, pretty stethoscope under the Christmas tree this year. We'll see if my dreams come true :)

Yeah I have a huge wishlist with Amazon as far as books go.

Well I completed the background check a while ago, and I just went to the school and dropped off my medical health exam stuff in the drop box. Now all I have left is turning in a copy of my CPR card, taking the class on Nov. 12th! So excited for orientation too!

What scrubs have you been looking at? I haven't looked at any yet, but I'm definitely going to make sure I get ones with pockets!

I've bought my stethoscope and a blood pressure cuff already. I also bought the Nursing Fundamentals book that someone recommended getting a head start on. That's the only book I'll get for now though just in case any of the books change that are required.
