Court in Ohio upholds BME rules prohibiting AAs from performing regionals, or central lines. I find this rather intersting. There seems to be a battle between AAs in Ohio and the Ohio ASA. Go to the AANA website under members section to see the ruling.
I would like to hear from JKW on the real issue. Forget all these petty side skirmishes. Why is it that the Ohio ASA is at war with the AA? Who remembers the good old GRE for CRNA school! You Know
I cannot help but notice that JKW has not commented on the real issue of my original post.
since this was not intended to be disrespectful I have removed the parts of the post that might be misinterpreted...canoehead
I like having AA's and even the occasional anesthesiologist on here to look at different perspectives and to clear up misconceptions
I thought this thread was about Alcoholics Anonymous; after all, we AAs have had our title since the 1930s @ before rehads & such it was pretty routine (in the '40s-60s) for AAs to come & speak c Pts.

The OSA is not at war with AA's. The law was written in haste a few years ago when Ohio moved to license AA's after a new attorney general decided to change a 30 year history of AA practice in Ohio. AA's in Ohio had always done regionals and central lines prior to that time, and there was no intent when the law was written to change that. However, that one little word caused a problem. AA's tried to deal with that, and immediately when the action was first filed, the courts issued a TRO to keep things as they had been, using the simple and correct reasoning that there was no intent to change the way AA's had been practicing already. Now, two levels up the appelate ladder, things changed back.
The ASA looks at regional anesthesia and central lines as physician-only procedures. There is no requirement for it's members to take that stance, but that is the preference of the organization. Some in the OSA obviously take that stance. Do I agree with it? Nope.
Hope that answers your question, even though you didn't ask one in your original post.
And Kat, ether, and rn29306 - thanks. You bring a professional demeanor to the table that is sorely lacking at times among your peers. Differences of opinion are fine. I still can't figure out why some can't deal with these topics on a professional level instead of resorting to name-calling and "animal farm references".
OK - I've just spent about 20 minutes cleaning up all the personal attacks on this thread. It's obviously an important issue to rouse such emotion in a group of educated professionals, so the thread is not trashed (as was the moderators' first instinct).
Everyone needs to keep in mind the bulletin board terms of service and know that they will be enforced, even if you leave a note saying "this isn't intended to be a slam" or try to be subtle, you will be edited and demerits will be given.
Poster with the most demerits will be billed for my time, stress, and transportation to all my AA meetings. Post cautiously.

I had to get to the end of the second page to figure out that this thread wasn't about "self-medicating"
(really just shooting for a cute way to ease this thread before it becomes really hot)
