Let me apologize by saying:yes, I know I am supposed to give the exact site when I say I saw something in the paper or on the net and I would if I knew how to do it but I don't so I do the best I can in being precise in telling where and when I read something.
Have said that, I was digging around on the msn.com site last evening, looking under law and health issues, and saw a listing of the top 50+ worst nursing homes in the nation. Naturally I clicked on to the list, expecting to see a home from WV listed. Imagine my surprise and delight, when after reading the whole list and then reading it again, not one home from WV was on the list. Finally, a worst list WV did not make!
I am still in shock.

Barefootlady, I realize this is an older post, but I read it while searching for Beckley WV posts. Funny, instantly I started woundering if Canton MO nursing home was there....it has got to be the worst nursing home I have ever worked/been to.
To change the subject not so gradually , Do you know what Beckley WV hospital condition is like right now? Just got submitted for an icu position there today. I was submitted for SICU a few months ago and never heard anything from them. (story of my life in this travel RN profession) I was looking to get out of traveling, applied for a couple of staff rn jobs, and neither of them panned out. SO back to traveling I go, until I can find somewhere that I like. Not talking hospitals, those are reallllllly few and far between these days, but a general community/area that I like. I read on some older post that Beckleys (Raliegh hospital) has some poor managment, I take it this is why they probably need travelors? Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated! I have never seen the mountains that direction. I have been to the Rockies once (took a travel contract there during the dead of the winter . Other than that have never seen any other mountains, so I am excited/hopeful to hear from them. I think it would be an awesome opportunity to get over that direction and explore! Thanks, Auntsas
Hello,
Here is what I know. Every hospital in WV is hiring nurses, and if you are an experienced nurse ready and willing to come on board, work for a lower salary than some other places, understand the pace here is slower and the doctors practice as much defensive medicine as proactive medicine, then come on over. COL is a little lower here on food, but gas can be high, utilities are in the middle. We have an older population so respect is important to the patients. We do have HIV, STD's, Hep B and C but in lower numbers than many, many other places. We are not as culturally diversified as other places, we do have a few blacks in the bigger towns, a few Asians,
a few Indians, and a few Mexicans. There are few race problems here. We have all four seasons, our roads are rough in many places, (coal trucks really eat them up), and we are within 500 miles of many of the important cities in the East. Flights leave Charleston every morning for New York and return every night. Myrtle Beach, SC, the vacation spot of many, is about a 7 hour drive, other beaches are closer, the Smokies are close but we have our own mountains, so they are not quite as impressive to us, Columbus, Ohio is 4 hours from my door, Charlotte, NC is about the same. We can be clannish but we are not stupid, we do not marry our own family, we have some of the best laws for women on the books(that was reported on GMA) and our graduation rate is higher than NC, Va, Nevada, Tx, and many, many other states. Good luck and come on over if you can. You might be surprised and love it.
THanks for your input! I am very excited/hopeful. I have a feeling if I do get the chance to come over, I will love it. I dont mind the slower pace, I dont live in a big city myself. Missouri has some backwoods people, I am one of them! Thanks again, I will let you know if I hear from them, I pray I do. I really need a contract! Thanks
I was also going to ask, when you say Lower salary, how much lower are we talking? Started out in nursing at 16.45/hr in 2005, now I make around 22. Cant be much worse than that is it?
New grads start around 20/hr. With experience salaries go from 22-30/hr depending on what you do. Perdiem pays 32-36/hr. You would probably fit in here, I have distant family in Missouri and they had no problems adjusting to Missouri. Ofcourse, they missed the mountains. Get on some of the newspaper sites, they may have helpful info for you. Good luck.

LOL barefoot!!! What a wonderful dissertation on our state!!!
I'm in shock also that they didn't find a WV facility to put on the list! Probably not due to trying! YaY!
Hello blueheaven,
My SIL, who grew up in MI, says he hates to hear our state belittled now that he has spent time here and met some of the people. He loves our mountains and our slower paced life-style. Several people I grew up with and now live all over the country say WV is one of the best kept secrets in the country. I tend to agree with them. LOL!
Well have a good day and blessings to you.
