A/P 2- endrocine/learning hormones/ 72 hours till test/class & need tips..

Published

Hi,

I had my first day of anat. lab on Monday, and my first lecture class yesterday. We did not get very far in lecture-and I have a very "progressive" lab professor who believes in having both anat. and physiology taught in her class (as opposed to just anat)- anyhow, walked out with 6 very long pages of notes in addition to having to know the hormones, where they are made, what they target, function, and stimulus for each. Needless to say, I don't think that mine was the only head spinning from the class. And did I mention that I have 72 hours left to have this under my belt? I have been writing the stuff repeatedly in an effort to memorize. I am 50% through it and afraid that in the end I will end up confusing something with something else...

In addition, I find it very hard to learn something-that I don't even know anything about... I have read all 120 pages of the chapter prior to school-and I am re-reading again....I am also writing the words down to get the spelling down pact because if you spell it wrong, it is wrong...

Anyone out there have any tips???? I can't be the only person in this boat...

Does anyone know of any web sites that will help? I was thinking about going to the library to see if they have any (TLC-like) educational videos or something?

thanks in advance...

I can only tell you to read your notes, re-read, and re-read again.

Go into tutoring for help, if needed.

If you try to look at the big picture, it may help.

For example: The Hypothalamus makes TSH-RF, it goes to the Anterior Pituitary (adenohypophysis) which then synthesizes and releases TSH. The TSH goes through the general circulation until it finds the correct receptors which is of course the Thyroid cells. The TSH causes the thyroid to release thyroid hormone, which causes a feedback to the hypothalamus to stop releasing TSH-RF, thus the pituitary stops synthesizing and releasing TSH.

and so on.....

remember with the pituitary adeno synthesises, neuro only stores

The heart can also be considered part of the endocrine system, as well as many other organs intestines, kidneys, etc.

Good luck! I took A&P 2 in a 5 week class. It is difficult, you must be dedicated as well as determined, but it's doable.

Hello to you. I don't start anatomy until after Labor Day, I am excited and nervous. I was browsing the internet for some sites that may help me and I came across Mr. Johnsons Biology page. It has practice quizes and lots of information. Maybe it will help you.

I wrote out the negative feedback loops. It really helped organize what the releasing hormones are, what they release and target etc..

anterior pituitary vs posterior vs adrenall medulla vs cortex.

The loops made it easier for me. Give it a try. good luck!!

Thanks for the replies everyone...... with any luck I will have the whole thing memorized in 48 hours...... and there is hurricane on the way---with the possiblity of school being closed Monday- (if it is-I will have another 6 days of study-since I only go to lab 1x a week)

good luck to everyone- & I will check those web sites out- I went to library today and found a National Biography tape on the human body on endocrine & glands- I can't wait to get off work to go home and watch it.

Our teacher had us make out a table... what hormone, where stored/made, what it affected, etc. You can make it out in Excel. Then you can also make one with blank spots and practice writing in the correct answer. I am a very visual learner and I could picture in my mind where things were on the table to help me memorize (prolly can't tell you NOW...LOL.... but I knew it for the test  )

You'd be surprised what you retain! Our A&P instructor had us do the same thing by making out a table and memorizing it. I have an exam Tuesday in Pharm over the Endocrine system and so much of that exact stuff is on our exam. It actually makes sense THIS time around though. ;)

Good luck to the OP on your exam!

I am starting this class on the 8th so can't help you there. But, I have found that making up acronyms helps tremendously. I remember PEAF from the muscles in part one. Posterior extends and anterior flexes....etc :rotfl:

Good luck in your exam and studies.

I made flowcharts for the hormones. Like this hormone activates this one, or prevents this one from activating. And more of this one activates this hormone. Sorry I can't say what the hormones were. It's gone from my head.
