A Nurse CAN be both sexy & smart

Published

I am skipping a bunch of posts so I'm not sure if someone said this already: I think the biggest problem may be nurses' portrayal by the media. Nurses are portrayed as sex objects or as physicians' handmaidens on TV and movies and no one understands what we actually do. People do not know that nurses are educated professionals, work independently from physicians, are both men AND women, and are not sex objects. Once people understand health care and what nurses do I think nurses will be treated better and respected more.

It does not have to be an either or situation.Dowdy does not always equate to smart.

A nurse can be both smart/educated professional and sexy as heck!:yeah:

Why does one taking care of oneself lead to the dumbo comment? You can't hide sex appeal. So yup, nurses can have it both ways.

Three cheers for sexy smart nurses:up:

I agree with Five and Two Will Do and to eric wellll . . I just wrote something really intellectual on another thread so my feelings aren't hurt. :p Your thread about ducks got quite a number of responses as I recall . . .

Anyway, after working at two teaching hospitals I've seen what Five is talking about, and I wish these girls knew how guys make fun of them behind their back, so I cringe, and then I actually feel sorry for them.

I'm not sure if your peers lose all respect for you that you can ever get it back entirely.

Oh, the "Time to Call a Duck a Duck" thread was at least nursing related.

I mean, seriously, is it just me? Am I grumpy cause its my turn in the barrell for doing a couple night shifts or something? This thread doesn't strike you as juvenille?

Wonder if the professions have discussions like this? Lawyer says to Doctor: "Nah nah na nah nah, mine's bigger than yours so I get all the girls." Yeah, nuff said.

Then again, I should support this sort of thing. My teeth have been in shambles since I was a kid because of meds I had to take for seizures, my hair is going grey, I'm as tan as an islander in some places and pale as an Eskimo other places, have a pot belly and am hairier then the "before" pics in hair removal ads............guess I'm some kinda f'ing genious or something.

I just don't get the point. As nurses, we have to display everday decent personal hygeine........so what? And if you need to be taught that or need a "nursing diagnosis" to understand it........find another career, you are dangerous.

I like it! Perhaps this one would get their attention: Readiness for enhanced self respect

[HUGE SIGH!!]

Eriksoln--- I personally talk about patient outcomes enough at work. I am willing to bet that the other nurses who participated in this thread also deal with patient outcomes at work ad nauseam. I come to AN to share moments of levity with fellow nurses, not to discuss "the details of nursing".

Just because the participants in this thread have chosen to chat about something frivolous, does not not negate their absolute right to illustrate the lack of professionalism with which we are treated.

If you feel the need to be "ALL NURSE-ALL THE TIME", I suggest you check out the chat rooms at www.nursingsociety.org, or a nursing specialty website like ena.org or aacn.org. I am sure that there are some riveting conversations about improving patient outcomes.

BTW, not only can I say "narcissistic", I can spell it.....

Doh!!! #@$%^ing spell check.

Guess I need to go get a really bad hair cut, then I could spell too.

Here's my issue: Do you really believe the nurses who worry about such things as this.........all of a sudden drop it and act differently at work? Nope. Not in a million years, I don't believe it. My theory: Those who get caught up in juvenile debates are probably juvenile in nature. Hey, but that's just my theory.

[scene: Two "sexy and smart" nurses standing in the hallway, with doctor's and family members and all sorts of others within ear shot.]

"Ewwwww, look at her huge butt. OMG, doesn't she know to wear darker colors so those folds don't show so much? Like totally...............Miss. Fatty, meet Mr. Treadmill"

[Now, pick which one you think the friend's response is.]

A. "I just noticed my patient with a hx of DVT is not on any anti-coagulants. They also are being less active than they usually are, in fact they refused PT/OT today. I think I'm going to at least notify the doctor of this when they round."

or

B. "Giiirl, I totally got you there. I'll buy her the girf certificate for the gym if it helps. When is lunch anyway?"

I think my tone in prior posts makes it obvious which one I think came next. Oh, BTW, the answer is "B" incase you're not a "sexy smart" nurse and don't get it.

Again.................don't be one of them and then, in the next breath, tell me "Nursing is a profession, why does't anyone outside the field see it?" (Nobody loves me, everyone hates me, might as well eat worms).

----sighhhh---- I know your Duck Thread wasn't technically about ducks. Proceeding to wipe all elements of humor or light banter out of my consciousness. I hope that worked. Honestly, I didn't perceive this as catty or the female version of size issues.

Because generally women have greater lee-way with hair, make-up and jewelry even in the nursing setting it's a perfectly legitimate topic and I don't see it as the Valley Girl sounding gossipy thing you do. This isn't to say there is none of that in nursing, just that merely discussing the topic doesn't make it catty.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I have felt completely non-jealous and/or feel competitive about a nurse who says she cares about her appearance! I'm happy about it! I hate dandruff and chipped nail polish!!

Also, nobody can eat worms for a while - dthfytr cleaned out the allnurses worm supply when he mistakenly thought he wasn't on the short list of AN members other AN members would want to meet.

Can't I have just one worm? You are funny!:lol2:

Thanks! -- maybe you can convince Paul (dthfytr) to chop some in half. I heard they grow a new head pretty quickly so we can build our stock back up for the next person who feels nobody likes them . . .and so on. :)

Where I live they sell worms in most gas stations. For fishing not eating. Some places have 2 or 3 varieties:yeah:

I guess this was off of the topic of sexy smart nurses which I am sure you all are!

This is just a pretty typical off-label thing people who Walk By Night engage in - I imagine all the day-shifters log on and wonder what happened to their nice normal on-topic thread while they were sleeping.

Sexy, smart. . .worms???

OH OH, I can actually help with this one! I raise worms for the purpose of organic gardening, so you all can make a trip to Mississippi and eat up! I would be honored to help those in the nursing profession in such a way!:lol2:

In about 2 weeks I can also sell you some organic cucumbers (those will be ready first). "Sexy & Smart" male nurses get a discount...

Wonder if "sexy smart worms" also try to convince people they are professionals at the same time?
