I tried posting this a while ago, and my computer wigged out on me, so if this duplicates later, I apologize!
I am starting an LPN program in January, and wondering what I should look for in a stethoscope? I cannot afford the "best" just starting out, so what is the best one for the money? I have heard Littman is good, but there are so many varieties, what should I look for in one?
Thanks!

Littman is good, but expensive ($130.00 ish). I have the Littman Cardiology III. I started out originally with the Littman Lightweight, but I couldn't hear with it. I took it back and compared it with the Cardiology III, and the difference was like night and day. You might want to try a Sprague. It is not expensive at all, and has a dual lumen which, for me, makes it easier to hear. You can get one of these in a bunch of different colors for about $15-20. Go to the store and try a few out on yourself and you will be able to compare and tell the difference, and know which will work for you. Good luck!

I got a Littman Classic II for $52. I think they usually cost more, but I ordered through our student nursing organization who gets a discount.
MyBSNin06 - Do you like that one? It doesn't sound too horribly expensive for just starting out...I just can't afford the $150 one at this point!! :)

The only two things you need to worry about with a steth are, can you hear through it, and can you afford it? So try 'em out at a store; I didn't and now I have a Littman classic II that I can't use, and two electronic ones that work for me. If you're shy about sticking things down your shirt in a store, bring in a friend and stick things down their shirt instead.

I have the Littman Classic II also and it works great for me. I paid $62.99 for it. But maybe check and see if you get any sort of discounts at some local medical places around town through your school.

My aunt who is an MD in NJ once told me that "a stetho ain't no stetho unless it's a Littman" :-)
