A&P

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I will be in the last developmental math and lifespan development in the Fall. Should I take A&P 1 too or should that be taken by itself? Do I need biology before A&P? It's not a requirement for my school but will it be easier? Any help is greatly appreciated!

It depends on how well you can handle multiple classes. Anatomy and Physiology is a heavy course. There is a lot of studying involved. I dedicated 4-6 hours a DAY the week before the test. But I also took it in the summer where it was 8 weeks instead of 16. So all of the homework and tests were pushed together. Most tests were at least 3 chapters.

did you have biology and chemistry in high school? did you graduate recently, if those answers are yes you should be okay in a&p. if not, take bio and chem.

good luck

Biology is often a requirement for A&P. When it is, the class will be taught assuming the students have that background. When it isn't, the class will be taught assuming the students don't have that background. So, the professor at your school will either not use the concepts and/or vocabulary from the biology class or will explain and/or define them as part of the class. In a nut shell, no, you do not need it.

However, yes, it would help to have biology before A&P even if it isn't required. Then you will be reviewing some of the concepts instead of learning them for the first time. I took biology after both of my A and P classes. I don't think it makes a lot of difference.

If you need the biology anyway, you just don't need it before A&P, then I would take the biology first. Unless you expect to have a lot lighter load this fall than in your later semesters. A&P almost always a heavier load than biology, so it would good to take in the semester you have a lighter load otherwise.

Human development is a fairly easy class. I took it with Micro. A&P requires a bit of memorization but isn't too tough. If you have never had Bio before, you may have a steeper learning curve though.

At my school, there are no prereqs for A&P I. I took it with 8 other credits - college algebra, general psych, a work study course (blow off credit), and a weight lifting class. There were only two courses I really needed to study for and I studied twice as much for A&P than I did psych. With that being said, I studied about 4 hours a week for A&P. I wish I had studied more but I did earn an A. With that being said, I was one for about 4 people in my class to receive an A. Personally, I do not think you need to take any prereq courses for that class, but I would suggest you brush up on your chemistry. For example, become very family with the different bonds and chemical reactions.

When you do take A&P, the key is to not let yourself fall behind. Everything builds onto itself. Make sure you do the reading before class if you struggle. I did not do this because I am one of those lucky individuals that catches on fairly quickly. Also, if I found that if I did the reading before class, I would get bored, stop paying attention, and miss something.

You just need to find out what works for you and do that. Good luck!!

I thought that A&P 1 was an easier course to take with other classes than A&P 2. Mostly memorization like previously mentioned. I took it with Sociology while working two jobs and I did well (A-). When I took A&P 2, I also took Micro and lucked out that I had an amazing teacher for Micro and an easier teacher for A&P 2. If there's a class to take by itself, Micro and A&P 2 are it! Good luck!

Spoke to my advisor and she said I should take A&P 1 and my math in the fall. I am nervous but excited! How do you check if your hospitals are hiring ADN students or if they want BSN's?

If you just go to the hospitals website and click on careers then you should be able to read about the nursing postings and see which degrees they prefer. At the hospital near where I used to live, it states that they prefer BSN's and then other postings will state BSN's only. Now I am lucky enough to have moved closer to another hospital that doesn't really prefer whether you have a BSN or ADN.

I took A&P I along with a math and an english class.

I had been out of school for 20 + years and did not take biology first. I did go out and get a a book called Get Ready for A7P by Lori K Garrett, which helped out.

I also purchased the school text book early to see what I was in for.

So to is really about what you can handle, I have a husband and 3 kids, this was all I could handle that quarter.

Best of luck with your decision making,

Angela

You should do fine taking A&P in the fall. I had A&P right out of high school with ENG 111, Chemistry 111, communications, microbiology, and Psy. But I wont lie it is a ton of work! My best advise to you is don't fall behind. Read the chapter before you go to class and study like crazy ;)

I'm taking Human Devel in the Fall with A&P 2. We can't take Micro before A&P. Can someone tell me more about Human Devel???
