Ok everyone listen to this,
Our A&P instructor to ME is trying to take us under!!! She is tuff on us 24/7. She is telling people that if they want to make it in Nursing they should quite there jobs if they cant keep up with the studying. Im in a parttime LPN program were 90% of people work.
Im in class on Tuesday and Thursday and every other weekend is clinical.
Well The instructor gave us Two chapters of reading to do Endocrine and Reproductive, She gave us this assignment last night along with some worksheets to do then she tells us that we are having a examine Tuesday on these two chapters, Last night she gave us soo many notes, and she would not repeat what she was saying, She was talking soo fast... So basically she wants us to
#1 remember all the notes she gave us in class about the different hormones
#2 to do the homework assignment and read both chapters
#3 study for the examine that will be given on Tuesday
#4 I have clincals this sat. and Sun.
.
#5 I have a exam in Nursing 101 that I just found about also last night!!THat is On the same day as the A&P exam.
So what Im asking is? Is this is the way nursing is suppose to be ? I knew going into this that it was going to be difficult but come this is cruelity at least to me it is.. There is no way My brain is going to absorb all this info and retain it by next week..especially when I have very little time to study.. It just not fair.. I feel she is doing this out of spite! She has no sympathy for anything or anyone
When Im I going to have to to study for my nursing exam?...
Im just stressed!!! She's trying to take us under!!!!
I am also in an LPN program, but its fulltime. There are others in my class who took biology before(in fact one was a biology major in college) and they have to take it too. At least at my school, any of your former credits earned at another school don't count. Everyone is on the same wavelength at the same time. Each mod(semester) has certain classes we have to take together.
I take about 4 exams a week. We learned the integumentary system in one day and had to take the exam for it two days later. We take an exam after each chapter of our A&P books. Our next exam is the Respiratory system.
Maybe things are fast paced because its part time?(lots of stuff to cram in a shorter time) How many months is your program? Mine is 15 months, but like I said its full-time. I know they cram a lot with our school, because most schools around here go for 18 mos.
I am really fortunate that all of my teachers are really nice(except my lab teacher is a real *censored*) . The A&P teacher will stay after school if you need help or we can IM her on AIM for questions.
Just keep studying the best you can. Don't give up whatever you do. I work weekends and am a mom of 3..(Ages almost 3, 7, and 10 yrs old) and I'm doing better than some people in my class. Most of the ones who are failing don't make time to study.
Good Luck!
WOW! I am not sure..Sounds like they are only for profit...and that its not about helping people...
It sounds like your classes are majorly crammed. (Cramming twice the amt of information into your heads.)
I recommend "A&P for Dummies". It really helps make things click in your head, when you just don't understand something. Also there is the "Anatomy Coloring Book" (Its by some author named Kapit...I think)You can get each one for $15 or less at Walmart.com
Yeah my school offers after school tutoring.., but it just won't work for me. My school is 45 minutes away and I need to be home to get the kids off the bus..(Noone is willing to watch them much after 3:30pm) The books I mentioned have helped lots though. My test score today on the Integumentary System was a 95. The two questions I missed were from changing the answer from my first instinct(which would have been right.)
Also record your teachers lectures..It may help...Maybe form a study group with other people you go to school with. My teacher said that those who are in study groups have brought their grade up an average of 20 pts.
Originally posted by Born2BAnursewell the program that I go to Is 18. and I have another 12 months to go... ON top of that there is noone there to help you, There is no support and no Tutors!!!!!!!!!!The only tutor that they did have they ran off!!!
How can you run a school with no support systems??
My school uses AP I as a "weed out" course. Every semester about 60-70% of the students drop out or get a D or F. Some people retake the class and make it the second time and others just give up.
I think they do it to reduce the number of people who apply to the nursing program and to get rid of anyone who isn't a very strong student.
It was the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. It was a nightmare!
Anatomy and Physiology Made Incredibly Easy is also a good book. I'm one of the #1 fans of the whole Incredibly Easy series - those books have helped me so much. I certainly give you a lot of credit for taking the nursing with the A&P, it's a lot to bite off and chew. I took just A&P during the particular semester when I took it and it was still a major challenge for me. Would a study group help? I know it's hard finding time to meet with one too, but sometimes our peers can bang something into our head in 15-20 minutes that would normally take 2 hours to get through in a book! This very thing happened to me last week - I was going round and round trying to understand the negative feedback system with hormones in the endocrine system. I was reading and reading, going on the internet, driving myself nuts. I voiced my frustration to a classmate in the bathroom of all places, and she cleared it up for me in about three minutes. I still can't believe how I was beating myself up trying to get it and another person's version and words cleared it all up.
I'm graduating this December and I never found nursing instructors guilty of the "weed-out phenomena". There is a lot to learn to understand what you are doing and then comes the reality check once we pass boards. Your A&P class sounds normal. I took them separately and I retained more. Just know that you must make the decision to give up your life for a time. Someone once said that the montra of a nurse is everything must be done now or all hell will break loose. That is how you get through nursing school. :)
I feel your pain... our A&P teacher calls herself "The gatekeeper to the nursing program", and she HATES the fact that she's teaching nursing students. We have taken complaints about her all the way to the head of the science department, but it seems nothing can be done. They are "keeping an eye on her". 3/4 of our class is failing, the best average right now is an 87%... I have an 82% at the moment (I think I'm just a good guesser). Anyway, having A&P as a co-requisite is definately tough. And this is how it will be for me ALL throughout nursing school. I need to take EVERYTHING, I have not a credit to my name. It's not a good idea to have the "weed out" process while people are going through the program. If you fail any other class, you can't continue on. That terrifies me... I have to get through two years of classes and HAVE to pass them all first try. Plus our program is brand new, in order to be accredited a certain amount of us have to pass, there's only 39 of us. If half of us fail A&P, the other half might be screwed as well because the program will never be accredited. Ah!!
I can't stand those people who think being a stay at home mom is easy.
I used to work before last semester and I can tell you working a full time job and going to school was a lot easier than staying home with 2 little kids while in school full time.
On top of that, we live in a horrible school district and surprise to me I have ended up homeschooling my oldest daughter. And that is another full time (but fun) job I had not planned on. I have a 5 year old and a almost 2 year old who is always on the move, getting into everything type of kid 9well what 2 year old isn't? lol)
Just do what you have to do to get through this class. Like someone else said get yourself a tape recorder to record her lectures so you dont miss anything (you can get those for cheap).
Your class sounds similiar to my Physio class though, this has truly been the hardest class I have ever had and I am at the point where I am sick of it and ready for it to end (lol not till dec though). We have quizzes all the damn time, homework to turn in, never ends LOADS of things to memorize. It is just aweful some days....lol Out Physio class goes all the way to the atomic level too (I think most stop at cellular) but oh no we go all the way....lol
((hugs)))

I too thought my A&P professor was being unfairly hard.....but then I realized that she does it for our benefit. We have to take an entrance exam for Pathophysiology next fall....withou a good A&P background, you will fail not go on in nursing school at my school. My professor basically says "memorize everything". It really is a "weeding out" course at my school to get all of the non-serious people out.

amen to that! i also am a stay at home mom with an almost 3 yr old, and between potty time, baths, accidents sometimes overnight (meaning i now have to stri the bed wash the plastic cover and do laundry), making healthy meals, teaching and play time (because that is very important) and cleaning the house i barely have time to study during the day. Not to mention shopping and running errands. I also have classes and meetings in the evenings. I study mainly during her nap time which is about 1 1/2-2 hours thank god! I have a great supportive hubby who will take her to the gym sometimes in the evening while he plays b-ball or will just play or read to her while i study in the evenings. it is hard but i am determined and i figure why wait because no situation is ever "perfect" for going to school.
