A&P and Chemistry online - Ivy Tech

U.S.A. Indiana

I am retaking both A&P 1 & 2 to raise my points for the LPN to RN transition program since I didn't get in for this summer. I figured since I already took them as well as went through all the LPN courses (old curriculum) at Ivy Tech and passed boards it shouldn't be too bad for me and might just be review. I am registered for A&P 101 face to face this summer but am considering switching to on-line. I wondered how they did the lab portion though. The section I am looking at is not a hybrid class. I have taken other on-line courses (Eng, Psych, Comm-got As) and enjoyed them so it wouldn't be new to me. I understand what it entails.

I would appreciate any input. Is one class easier on-line than the other? I thought A&P102 was much easier than 101 face to face but then 101 was one of the first classes I took when going back to school 4 years ago & took it in the Summer as well - I am a lot different student now. By the way, I took those classes before I was certain I would continue to get my RN so the grades weren't that important at the time (I got Bs). I plan to take A&P 102 and Chem 101 Fall 09 and am considering online then too.

Any details & input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm taking the class out of Terre Haute. I have a female teacher. Have you heard anything about A&P I out of TH? Also, I bought a used textbook that comes with the practice lab...what else will I need? I know that I will have to buy the access code for course compass, but what else is there?

I don't mind reading it on my own since it's best for me to do late at night (I'm a night owl and I have four kids). I'm just worried about the final. I don't want to fail the entire class! Now that I've read if I don't make at least a 65% on the final (is it like that in ALL anp101 classes), I'm a little stressed!

Thanks!!!

I've not heard anything about A&P at Terre Haute. You won't have to go there at any time, you just have to go to your closest campuse twice for proctored exams.

The only things you definitely need are the textbook and course compass code. Course compass access should include access to Practice Anatomy Lab, Interactive Physiology, Anatomy 360, and PhysioEx. I do have all four of those CDs but did not have to use them because they were all on course compass as well.

If you want the lab book, you can have mine. I read thru it but there is no writing in it. If you want it post here and I'll PM you (since you can't PM until you have 15 posts). Unless they've changed the course, there really is no reason to buy the at-home lab kit. The 'lab quizzes' weren't even about the labs that we were supposed to do for the most part. (That's only for 101, I also just took 102 online and the lab quizzes were totally over the labs). I did look up a lot of lab activities on youtube, you can find videos of people doing the experiments on there. Other labs involve watching a video or doing simulated experiments on the computer with the PhysioEx.

I was just getting ready to ask the very same questions...I am doing the anatomy 101 out of Terra Haute too, and wanted to know which books I really need. I know the text is the new 8th edition, so it will be hard to find it used. But what does the lab manual look? Also can you get the access code if you don't buy from the bookstore. Sorry for all the qustions, I just like to be as frugal as possible.

And to taranator...I will look for you in the online class...maybe we could be study buddies!:)

Jennifer

You can usually buy an access code from the publisher's website, I think they run about $50.

taranator- I ended up deciding to take 102 this fall instead of 101, and am doing it face to face. I was able to get the two awesome profs so I ran with it!

Taranator - I just finished 101 from Terre Haute. If you want, PM me your instructor's name and I can probably tell you exactly what to expect.

Gizmo,

I can't PM anyone yet since I don't have enough posts. Can I put initials on here?

csab,

That sounds great. Please PM me. :-)

Jen,

I'll look for you, too! Study buddies sounds great...I'm really nervous about this class!

BTW, i didn't get the 8th edition of the book, I bought the 7th with Serena. I wasn't aware that IT was now using that edition. Hopefully there won't be huge discrepancies in the material.

I think I will email the instructor and see if the 7th edition would be ok, the 8th is so much more expensive, and really how much could have changed in anatomy.

My guess is that what might have changed is some of the related information in chapters such as types of tests or medicines that are available. For example in the 7th edition, it mentions that a human papillomavirus vaccine is "on the horizon," whereas in the newer edition it should say that Gardasil is now available.

Hey, I just talked to the bookstore and they said that the book is a 1st edition and that the labpaq is included with the book instead of being bought separately. Has anyone bought the book package from the online bookstore this semester?

The instructor (J.W.) emailed me back and said it was ok to use the 7th edition. The bookstore will say anything to get you to buy their books.

I will be using the 7th.

The new book is the 8th edition, not first. What are they talking about? The new one is blue with a pic of a swimmer about to dive backwards off the block (might be Michael Phelps?). I do see how the bookstore is selling it all as a package. What a ripoff. From MY experience with online 101, I think that you would be fine with the 7th edition, an access code for Course Compass, and that's it. Of course I can't be sure that they haven't changed the quizzes, but my experience was that the lab quizzes were mainly over the book content and course compass practice quizzes, and really had nothing specifically to do with the labpaq. The ONLY part of my labpaq that I used was a skull model that I looked at when learning the skull bones. I had bought my labpaq used from craigslist and it was an older one so it didn't have the full skeleton model. Didn't hurt me at all and I didn't use any other part of the labpaq except for looking at slides with a kid's low-powered microscope, but even that was not necessary.
