May I ask are you still in Wyoming , and are you not working because its difficult to find a job? How did you like the program @ UW? Thank you

Hello. I am still in Wyoming. I am not working currently because I stayed home to raise my children. I am working on an RN refresher class through a program at Casper College. I've been reading the posts on this site to see what's happening in the nursing world. I enjoyed my college years at UW and enjoyed the program. I graduated in 1985 and know that things are completely different now. Different faculty, new building, the curriculum changed. I see you're from Cheyenne-we did some clinical there. Hope this helps! Maybe we can find some other Wyo. nurses.

There was a huge culture change going on when I left not long ago that I was not a fan of and a lot of people arent

It gave me the break I needed though to get where I really wanted to be so I cant complain too much.

I graduated from LCCC in May '14, and will graduate UW's RN/BSN program this August. I enjoyed my time there but we moved to Colorado for my husband's job. I stayed home with our littlest for a little while, began looking for jobs at the end of February, found one in the specialty I wanted by the end of March, and I start in less than 2 weeks. I'm happy to give whatever advice I can.

How did you like the program at lccc? How were the clinical experiences? Did you find it hard to get accepted with the point system? Sorry I have a ton of questions, but it's hard finding someone that went through there program,

I would reply to your PM, but I don't have enough posts I guess. I liked the program a lot. The clinical experiences were fine, not what you'd get in a bigger city with more hospitals perhaps (you will not get an actual OB/L&D clinical experience, it will be simulations, and there is next to no pediatric clinical experiences). The program is going through changes (as most do) and I believe now 1st and 2nd semesters are in a long-term care setting. 3rd semester is more of an acute-care hospital setting, and 4th semester is psych/community health experiences and your preceptorship (which you have input on.. so if you're set on working with kids, you can request preceptorship on the peds floor). I learned and saw what I needed to be successful. To get the most out of it, you need to be prepared every day, volunteer for every opportunity you can (oh you're changing a cath? can I do it?), and ask questions every time you don't understand something or just because you're curious.

I got accepted after applying while I was still enrolled in A&P 1. It helped that I have a previous bachelor's degree and got A's in most of my classes that were counted for points. I believe I had a low 90 on the point system.. they may have changed points a little since I applied, but I had no previous working experience in the medical field so I didn't get points for that.

A lot of people work as a CNA throughout the program, and some work as an LPN the second year if they pass the NCLEX-PN.

I'm applying in September and depending on how my 2 summer classes go I should have 95 points fingers crossed. Only thing that scares me is I'm doing a &p 1 online only summer option. I Didn't Know That About clinicals either, But I Don't neccasarily Want To Work With kids, but thank you for your advice I'm so nervous. Maybe I'll pm you my email or even my facebook, because I would love to keep in touch, and if you don't mind pick your brain a little. And congrats on your job in Colorado! !
