WGU RN-BSN prereq question

Nursing Students Western Governors

Hey beautiful nurses!

I am looking into my rn -bsn and seriously considering because of the awesome testimonials I've heard. One thing that confuses me is the list of prereqs, because under "general Ed" for their rn-bsn program, the prerequisites are astoundingly fewer than all of the other universities I have looked at. Has anyone done the rn-bsn with WGU, and if so, is there any catch with the few amount of general ed? It sounds too good to be true..

Also, if you have to have a certain amount of hours to graduate a bsn program, (120ish) then how can WGU offer such few prerequisites? When I graduate nursing with my ADN, I will have taken 73 credit hours. I will obviously need to complete some prereqs before the BSN, but the other universities Require SOOOO many more prerequisites than WGU.

Hope this makes sense and thanks for y'all's help!

This is because grants you 50 credits for possessing an active RN license.

I completed my BSN degree online through WGU and thoroughly enjoyed it. My only prerequisite courses were statistics, biochemistry, and health assessment.

Thanks! Does this mean that they add 50 hours in ADDITION to already taken prerequisites taken within last 5 years?

Yes...they accepted 36 hours worth of transfer credit for prerequisite coursework I had already completed, plus they granted 50 credits for possession of an active RN license.

P.S. - they have no five-year rule on prerequisite courses. The only course that needs to be taken within the last five years is statistics. They accepted courses for transfer credit that I had taken back in 2000 and 2001 at a local community college.

I probably had about 160 credits before I came to . Only about 80 of them transferred. Every school will require you to get X amount of credits from their school before they will offer you a degree. This is to prevent people from just taking 1 or 2 classes and being able to graduate.

While this will be an inexpensive program, you will be crying from the torture before you are "allowed" to begin. The transcript evaluators have no concept of science classes. While your EA may be sweet as cherry pie, this place i the pits . I have been waiting since June and each time I think that I am ready to begin another road block is put up..i am most likely not going to go through with it. I fear what lies ahead. THey cannot get transcript eval right- what about ifI need assistance with a course? Frustrated in DC

My transcript evaluation went wonderfully. I am sorry you are having an underwhelming experience.

I graduated from the RN-to-BSN program in March of this year, and while I did not need much 'help' while completing the coursework, I was always able to get assistance when I needed it. Between the weekly phone appointments with my program mentor and the assistance from the course mentors, the 'help' was prompt during the two instances I requested it.

I'm also sorry you had a difficult time. My whole enrollment process has been a breeze too, and they were very generous in their credit transfer policy, even accepting old classes I took at Ashworth College (which my RN program absolutely did not accept). I was very happy to find that they accepted all of my prereqs and my RN degree, and I'll be starting in December with just 31 CUs. If you're having an issue, talk to your enrollment counselor or ask for a different enrollment counselor. Before , I tried at Texas Tech and UT Arlington here in Texas, and both schools seemed incredibly unorganized. WGU has been a breath of fresh air -- so far! I'll let you know how I feel once classes have actually started!

I'm confused, Are you working on your ADN/RN currently? Or are you already and LPN or RN?

My enrollment process was very easy. I had to take quite a few 'pre-reqs' but that's because my ADN was from excelsior, where the science classes had no labs. They accepted quite a few 25 year old classes. I ended up with 50 units to take but still managed to finish in well under a term. My transcripts were evaluated quickly - I did have to appeal one course but lost because apparently CLEP does not keep official score records > 20 years (I had the copy that was mailed to me from 20 years ago, but that didn't count). Water under the bridge. :)

I moved to the Chicago area, enrolled in ASU online and am happy with the program
