Tarrant County College ranking system

U.S.A. Utah

Published

Hey everyone! Does anyone know what the actual system is to rank applicants to the TCC nursing program? I know the generalities, but would like to get a hold of the actual breakdown - how many points you get for GPA, TEAS score, etc.

I am a transfer student still working on my pre-req's, but my previous school (Austin Comm. College) published their point system on their webpage.

I will be applying in September 2009, have a 4.0 in all of my sciences and most of my other classes (I have one B in speech), and will get bonus points for my pharmacology class I took in Austin. Obviously, haven't taken TEAS yet.

If anyone knows the breakdown of points, I'd love to know what it is!

There is no way of knowing at TCC how your scores and GPA rank. I know this question has been asked so many times in the information sessions and the only answer I have heard is that they put your information into their spread sheet and the top 100 are picked. So no real answer. Annoying I know.

Thanks for responding - it is very annoying that the point system is such a mystery. I'm thinking of enacting the Freedom of Information Act. It would be nice to know the breakdown of how things are weighted.

They have said that the TEAS scores with science weighted heavier than the others and then the GPA of your science classes plays the most weight and then they figure in your other class GPA to get the total.

It would be nice to have something in place like Weatherford has for a point system that way you know how you stand as far as total possible points go.

One more question - do you know how they incorporate classes you've CLEP'ed out of into your GPA? Since you only receive credits, and not an actual grade? Thus far, I have A's in all of my sciences, CLEP'ed out of PSYC 2301 & PSYC 2314 & ENGL 1301. Have A's in ENGL 1302 and PHED 1164, but have B's in my Speech and College-Level math (Statistics). I haven't taken the TEAS test yet, but I test very well so I'm hopeful for a high score on that. I will also have Pharmacology and Medical Terminology when I apply. (Pharm is completed, Med Term next). Maybe I'm over-obsessing about this!

I have talked to the nursing department, and while they are very friendly, they are very vague!!

I have no clue as far as the CLEP goes.

Sounds like you will be good to go as far as your GPA and having the bonus points.

On the TCC Nursing website, it says that any sort of pharm classes, etc do not give you a beter chance of getting into the nursing program...if that is what you are saying. The higher your GPA (especially in your Sciences), the more Pre-req's you have completed, and your test score are the determining factors. Good luck!

For the Fall 09 application period they are bringing back Pharmacology and Medical Term for bonus points per the Information session last week.

Yeah, that's what they told me this week when I talked to them as well.

Be sure that whenever you get your transcript evaluated that you get anything that needs approval by the nursing department in writing and keep it. I was told that they would accept a class that I took at another university, and a member of the nursing faculty signed off on it saying that it was okay. During my second semester in the nursing program, they came to me and said that I was missing that class. Luckily, I had kept the paper that the faculty member signed off on, so they had to take my class. Also, they told me that they would not take the speech class I had taken for my bachelor's degree. So, I had to take a speech class at TCC before getting into the nursing program. After I was accepted, the very same person told me that they didn't know why I took the speech class at TCC because they would have taken the one that I took for my bachelor's. So, I took that class for nothing. It was a little frustrating. Anyway, be sure to keep copies of everything you give to them - transcript evaluation, shot records, etc.. The secretary in the nursing department is great, but I wouldn't leave anything to chance. As far as the point system goes, good luck with that. I am in my final semester of nursing school, and I still don't know how they calculate their point system. It sounds like you have a good chance of getting in, though. Good luck.

Do you have to have special evaluation from the nursing department, or is the general TCC transcript good enough? I am a transfer student, and my previous school split anatomy and physiology into two separate classes - 4 credits of anatomy w/ lab and 4 credits of physiology w/ lab. During my transcript evaluation process, I asked if my anatomy class could count as A & P I and I was told by Jonell that it was fine, to just take A&P II. I saved the email in case I ever needed to show proof of that.

So, do I need to take my completed evaluation to a nursing advisor??

Thank you all for all of the help!

Hello ALL, im also applying to TCC in September. All of my prereq's are complete except Microbiology which im taking at UTA in this fall. I have A's & B's in all of my courses ezcept english 1302 (I got a C :crying2:), but I have not taken pharm or medical terminology. Do you think I would have a good chance of being accepted?
