Traveling to Boston

I will be a first time traveler and hopefully taking a position in Boston in May 2014. I was wondering what others have done for cheap housing there? Or if anyone else will be traveling there at the same time, if they would want to share some type of housing. Any suggestions would be great!

"Cheap housing" in Boston does not exist. At least not in areas of the city you want to live in.

I think the cheapest you'll find, and I'm using the word "cheapest" very loosely, would be in a part of the city called Brighton. I work in the city and used to have an apartment there before I moved to the 'burbs. Its right on the MBTA (train line). It's a favorite for Boston College students though so you will have to deal with college kids all around you..

I lived in Brighton for 4 years and that is definitely its downfall. A very large percentage of tenants are BC undergrads living off campus. This was ok for me immediately after I graduated from there and still had friends there but, after 4 years, it was getting very old. I do not think Brighton is the cheapest part of Boston though (I mean, I was paying $975 for a studio). Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan are cheaper. But if you'll be taking public transportation after dark and don't know the area well, I wouldn't suggest living in these neighborhoods.

Brighton also may or may not be convenient depending on what hospital the OP is doing his assignment at. Brighton's a good location if you're working in Longwood but it would be a terrible commute on the T to MGH, BMC or Tufts.

That's also probably location dependent. I know that my college roommate was spending 2x as much as I was when we were both renting studios. I was in the Brighton area of Boston and she was in some upper side of Manhattan.
