I just wanted to say thanks to everyone (especially Ned) for the advice in my previous posts before I took my first travel assignment here in Hawaii. I was skeptical about my first travel assignment being so far from home but I am enjoying myself immensely and am already making plans on staying here for the foreseeable future.

I have been updating my blog (which mostly contained recipes before) about my experiences in Hawaii as a traveler. Not too much content on the job itself (which I also love) for confidentiality reasons but more about living on the island. Wow, Hawaii! Congrats. Hope I didn't mislead you about anything, I don't remember what advice I may have offered. Your post on Hawaii in the other thread was great, especially for those worried about making the plunge. I hope you don't mind, but I'm copying it here so others don't have to search for that post I just recommended.

I asked to take a LOA from my staff job in Atlanta for the same reason and I got a big, fat "no". So I wasn't going to let fear rule my life and resigned and was on a plane to Hawaii within a week (they weren'it pleased with my less than two weeks notice but oh well). It's the best thing I've done in nursing. I don't know if I'll get other contracts or if I'll be out of work between jobs but right now I don't care. I am planning on staying here in Hawaii if I can and if not, I am keeping in touch with multiple agencies so when it's time to leave I will have some leads on new positions.

For me once I left I feel I can never go back. I don't have a house or family back at home as some travelers do but my boyfriend is joining me out here next month and I plan on making a living out of traveling somehow. It just depends how bad you want it!

I would love to learn more about traveling to Hawaii!! I've filled out applications with several travel agencies and would love to go ASAP, but I'm worried about my current job. I want to ask to do a LOA as well but seeing as I've only been with them six months, I'm not sure if they'll grant me that... I'm strongly considering Hawaii and California. Which state were you a nurse before? What is your specialty? Which company are you traveling with? Feel free to PM me anytime!!

It helped greatly to have a place like this forum to talk to other experienced travelers to know what to expect. I was confused about pay and housing and you helped clarify some things for me which helped me to make a decision that I am very happy with today! Thanks again!

Hi Lauren!

I was with my last job in Georgia for 6 months as well and I REALLY liked it after not caring for my first RN job at all so I was reluctant to "give up a good thing" to take a chance doing something that sounds too good to be true. Especially with all the horror stories you hear, but I'm glad I took the chance because the job I am with now is even easier and I would stay in a heartbeat if they wanted me to. I have been a RN for 1.5 years in Georgia and was an LPN for 5 years before that in Louisiana. I was interested in California too because I hear that's the "promised land" for nursing with the unions and all but it is not a "walk through" state to get licensure anymore so it takes time to get your license (8-12 weeks from what I was told). Hawaii also has a union and is a walk through state so I had my license in 20 minutes when I arrived. I am interested in traveling to the Pacific Northwest next or international once I have my bachelor's next year too.

That is great! I went to a timeshare meeting to get some free tickets to tourist activities. I would think about getting one as well in the future!
